Family Doused with Gasoline in Home Invasion | WREG.com ...

Posted on: 9:44 pm, July 26, 2012, by Michele Reese, updated on: 01:19pm, July 27, 2012

(Marshall County) A terrifying home invasion in Mississippi. Burglars bust into a Lamar, MS home and douse a woman and three children with gasoline.

It happened just before 11 p.m. Wednesday night in the 400 block of Early Grove Road.

The woman was with her 9-year-old sister, and her 3-month-old and her one-year old children when the men armed with gasoline entered their home.

?The ordered everybody inside the residence including three children to lay on the floor in the living room area,? Kelly McMillan with the Marshall County Sheriff?s Office said.

McMillan said the burglars then doused the family with gasoline.

?It was a gallon and a half gas can,? he said. ?I?m not sure how much gas was in the can, but they started to sprinkle it all over the house.?

The men then walked out of the home with a big screen T.V., but as they went down the steps the T.V. fell.

Investigators say they got in a car and drove off.

Police believe Qwanesha Rhine and Shantel Fitzpatrick were the getaway drivers.

Thursday afternoon they were arrested for attempted aggravated robbery and burglary.

Investigators are looking for the three men involved.

The suspects are 20-year-old Martin Mitchell of Holly Springs,? 20-year-old Cedric McNeil of Memphis, and the third wanted person is a juvenile.

?Hopefully they?ll do the right thing and turn themselves in, but if not we?ll do everything we need to do to get them into custody,? McMillan said.

Police were able to collect evidence at the scene, including the gas can that was used in the assault.

?That?s crazy. Somethings wrong with them,? the victim?s cousin Q?Tavious Jones said.

Jones can?t believe his cousins were attacked with gasoline and robbed. He hopes those responsible are caught soon, ?They should be put in jail.?

When we showed family members pictures of the two women already arrested, they told us Rhine is related to the victim.

Marshall County investigators believe the three men could be connected to another home invasion in the county earlier this week.

They say three men busted into a home armed with guns on Monday night in Byhalia.

They are believed to be driving a 1980?s model Ford Mustang.

Timeline: U.S. policy shifts on Syria in Obama administration

(Reuters) - The uprising against Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has changed the course of U.S. policy from one of engagement when President Barack Obama first took office to a call for Assad to step down to increased support for Syrian rebels.

Here are some of the significant moments.

March 7, 2009 - The United States and Syria found "common ground" when U.S. officials Jeffrey Feltman and Dan Shapiro met with Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem in the first high-level trip by American officials to Damascus since 2005.

February 16, 2010 - Obama nominated Robert Ford to be the U.S. ambassador to Syria, the first since Washington withdrew its ambassador in 2005 after the assassination of former Lebanese Prime Minister Rafik al-Hariri in Beirut.

February 17, 2010 - Assad held security talks in Damascus with U.S. Under Secretary of State William Burns, after which the U.S. official said he was "hopeful" of progress.

April 8, 2011 - In a statement on the uprising, which began on March 15, Obama called on Assad to halt the "abhorrent violence committed against peaceful protesters."

April 22, 2011 - Obama condemned use of force against demonstrators and called on Assad to "change course now."

April 29, 2011 - United States slaps sanctions on Syria's intelligence agency and two relatives of Assad, in Washington's first concrete steps in response to the crackdown on protests.

July 12, 2011 - Obama sharpened rhetoric against Assad, saying the Syrian president had "lost legitimacy" for failing to lead a democratic transition.

August 11, 2011 - Obama and Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan in a phone call spoke about the violence in Syria and the need for a transition to democracy, the White House said.

August 18, 2011 - For the first time, Obama called for Assad to step down, saying: "For the sake of the Syrian people, the time has come for President Assad to step aside." Britain, France and Germany also called for Assad to step aside.

October 24, 2011 - The United States pulled its ambassador, Robert Ford, out of Syria over threats to his safety.

May 18, 2012 - Group of Eight leaders at Camp David discussed the need for political transition in Syria.

June 18, 2012 - Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin at the Group of 20 summit in Mexico agreed violence in Syria must end but showed no signs of reaching a deal on tougher sanctions against Damascus.

June 22, 2012 - U.S. Defense Secretary Leon Panetta defended the administration's decision to not arm the Syrian rebels, which has been criticized by some Republicans in Congress.

July 18, 2012 - Obama called Putin to discuss the deteriorating situation in Syria after a bombing in Damascus killed members of Assad's inner circle, but the two leaders ended the call divided over the best way forward.

July 19, 2012 - U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice called the Russian and Chinese vetoes of a U.N. Security Council resolution on Syria "dangerous and deplorable."

July 23, 2012 - Obama says Assad will be held accountable if he makes the "tragic mistake" of using Syria's stockpile of chemical weapons.

Gabrielle Giffords visits CERN atom smasher

Former Arizona lawmaker Gaby Giffords, the victim of a 2011 Arizona shooting that left six dead, visited the CERN and the French Alps with her astronaut husband, Mark Kelly.

Former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, still recovering from wounds after being shot last year, traveled high up into the French Alps on Monday with her astronaut husband Mark Kelly.

Giffords, who still uses a wheelchair much of the time, was on her first trip outside the United States since she was shot in the head by a gunman in January 2011 as she met local people outside a Tucson supermarket.

She rode the two-stage cable car to a station with spectacular views of Mont Blanc and other peaks in France, Italy and Switzerland.

In bright sunshine but sub-zero temperatures at an altitude of 3,842 meters (12,605 feet) at the cable-car station on the Aiguille du Midi peak, Giffords smiled as she stood with her husband's arm around her shoulders.

"Gaby is really enjoying this visit," Kelly told friends and reporters. "This is a great day for us."

Kelly, accompanied by other U.S. astronauts, then visited a nearby mountain research station to install a plaque recalling the last U.S. space shuttle mission.

The trip was organized by Chamonix Tourist Office and the European Nuclear Research Centre, CERN, in Geneva, where the AMS particle detector, which Kelly and his Endeavour team took to the International Space Station in May 2011, was developed.

Giffords was a Democratic member of the House of Representatives but resigned her seat this January, saying her district deserved to have a representative "who can give 100 per cent to the job."

Six people were killed in last year's shooting, which was thought to have been an attempt to assassinate Giffords. She is undergoing intensive therapy and her speech is impaired.?

The Corner | ABC Newspapers

Legendary Wall Street strategist Barton Biggs was bold and outspoken. He was one of a kind during an era on a Wall Street that doesn?t exist anymore. As a money manager at Morgan Stanley for over 30 years, he would become their first global strategist. He studied creative writing at Yale University and was known for his gifted writing style. On Saturday, June 14, Biggs passed away.

I first came into contact with Biggs in the early 1990s, then already known for predicting the bull market in U.S. stocks that began in 1982 and he warned investors away from the Japanese stock market in 1989 before it collapsed. He would go on to cast in stone his reputation by advising investors to sell high-technology companies as they roared higher during in the late 1990s. Many in the press and within the industry took issue with that forecast only to wish they didn?t by the time the Dotcom Bubble came to an end. Biggs never cared what other firms or analysts thought as he was a true maverick and followed his own instincts.

A colleague of his Stephen Roach stated, ?When I joined Morgan Stanley, we were a U.S.-centric business, and within three years, he [Biggs] said, ?Look, I?m going to step down as U.S. strategist and redefine myself as a global strategist.?

?He was way ahead of the pack in discovering and committing himself personally to being one of Wall Street?s first global investors and global strategists.?

Reminiscing about Biggs, Michael Holland, chairman of New York-based Holland & Company, spoke out, ?I think of a dinner in Rye, New York, at a fancy restaurant with Louis Rukeyser (financial journalist, columnist and commentator) and his wife and Barton Biggs and his wife and my wife and myself as one of the great evenings of entertainment and wisdom that I?ve experienced. He?s left a treasure behind.?

In Institutional Investor magazine?s annual poll, Biggs was voted among the top three U.S. portfolio strategists every year from 1976 to 1984. He and his global asset-allocation team took the top spot in 1998 and 1999. His global equity strategy team was first in 2000 and 2001. In 2003 he retired from Morgan Stanley to found Traxis Partners, a $1.5 billion hedge fund.

Biggs was not infallible as he totally missed the global market meltdown starting in 2007. Opining about the downturn Biggs stated, ?There have been many bear markets that we?ve all lived through, but this has been the most severe and certainly has had the most personal effects on people?s lives. I?m interested as to how hubris and arrogance have destroyed people?s lives and not just the lives of the hedge-fund money managers, but the lives of their wives, children, dogs and everything else.?

Biggs? time at Morgan Stanley was a period when the firm became one of the pre-eminent brokerage and investment banks in the world. For its part, Morgan Stanley traces its heritage to J.P. Morgan & Company after the Glass?Steagall Act of 1933 separated commercial and investment banking. Henry S. Morgan, the son of J.P. Morgan, and Harold Stanley, left J.P. Morgan & Co. and partnered with folks from the old Drexel crowd to form Morgan Stanley at 2 Wall Street. Biggs became managing director and general partner of Morgan Stanley in May 1973. He was their first research director and established Morgan Stanley Investment Management in 1975. He served on their board until 1996.

?He was known as an independent thinker, colorful writer and one of the pioneers of emerging markets investing,? Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman wrote, ?and our firm benefited from his vision.?

Former Morgan Stanley CEO John Mack said, ?He was totally independent. He thought out of the box and he got people to think out of the box. That?s how I?ll remember him, always as someone who was taking a much broader view or something that others had not thought of.?

While Biggs was no JP Morgan himself, he nevertheless was a giant among giants in this age. What was most striking was the fact that while many Wall Street types hedged their market comments on a daily basis, Biggs told it like it was ?? whether you wanted to hear it or not.

Quote of the week: ?We weren?t geniuses. We were just in the right place at the right time.? ? Barton Biggs (speaking about Morgan Stanley).

The Real Housewives of New York City: Blinded By the Wine

The Real Housewives of New York City are "Blinded By the Wine" and the gorgeous Miami skyline but is it enough of a distraction against the pervert who came to dinner?  We recap the strange photography and lewd dinner conversation in our THG +/- review.

Ramona can't wait to have lunch with Carole and Sonja. She's hoping to get all the dirt on Heather when something unexpected happens. The ladies only want to bitch about LuAnn.

Plus 7.  Ramona's more than happy to go along with that conversation, unexpected as it may be.  Little does she know what LuAnn has in store for her next.

As Ramona's saying how nice it is that she and LuAnn can at least be civil to one another in public, LuAnn's polite facade gives way to some mean spirited and oh so pretentious wine games.

Does Ramona Know Her Wine?

The set up is to blindfold Ramona in front of a crowd and ask her questions about her own wine in the hope that she'll embarrass herself.  Minus 12 to LuAnn and partner in wine snobbery Jaques. LuAnn needs to go back and read her own etiquette book. They may have found it funny but it's just plain mean to make fun of one of your guests…even Ramona.

What is it with the waxing of body hair on this show.  Last year we took a tour of Cindy's waxing boutiques and now LuAnn and Heather visit the Boom Boom Brow barMinus 8 because not only was it boring but LuAnn whined like a six year old.  Man up, woman.

Aviva invites everyone but Heather and LuAnn to her place in Miami.  Minus 5.  Of course she can invite whomever she wants but wasn't she the one giving Heather a hard time about excluding Ramona?

Before Sonja heads off to Miami she meets up with Heather and her marketing expert to work out Sonja's logo. Although Sonja came across pretty defensive to all of their suggestions, I'll agree with her on one point. The guy could have at least looked at her website before trying to design her brand.

Then it's off to Miami.  Plus 11 for that condo and the gorgeous view. That terrace was huge. I'm not sure I'd ever want to leave. It's so beautiful that Aviva even gets over her fear of heights.

Aviva tells Sonja not to worry about feeling like a third wheel. She's got a man to set her up with.  Plus 6 for thinking ahead but then there's always a catch.

The guy is Aviva's Dad. OK. That's a little weird and yet it gets worse.  Her father's a sex addict!

Sonja Contemplates Her Choices

Eww…but Sonja's fine with that. Well, she's fine with the sex addict part. It's the father part she questions. Of course Sonja likes older men. We'll have to wait and see how this goes.

Then we get to meet Aviva's father and he is all that and more. Aviva thinks her father is hilarious. Not quite the word I'd use. How many fathers talk vibrators with their in-laws over a family dinner?  Minus 10.  I won't even mention the giant hot dog he told his daughter to order at dinner. I really don't want an invite to Aviva's.

Aviva and Reid's condo is amazing, if a little odd. First off how do they keep the furniture that sparkling white with four children? Then there's the wall art.

Minus 12.  It must be kind of creepy to be lying in the guest room only to look up and see a giant portrait of Aviva and Reid getting handsy staring back at you.

But it looks as though this trip gets even more interesting next week when it appears that someone breaks the no nudity rule.
Will the gloves come off along with the clothing?  Stay tuned…

The RedWeek.com Blog: ARDA July ?Timeshare Fan of the Month ...

For July the American Resort Development Association (ARDA) is featuring four members from Shell Vacations Club (SVC) in its ongoing Timeshare Fan series. This is part of an industry initiative to showcase real timeshare owners talking about the reasons they love their vacations with timeshare.

Each of the SVC members cite a variety of reasons they?ve chosen timeshare as their preferred way to vacation?including more space, adventurous locations, and resorts around the globe?they all say that timeshare makes their vacation better.

?I brought three girlfriends with me on a recent getaway and they were in awe,? said Shell Vacations Club member Jayne Carney. ?They couldn?t believe we had two bedrooms and bathrooms, and I said, ?yes, I have this all the time!?? ?
The Shell Vacations Club profile is the ninth in a monthly series showcasing the passion of timeshare owners.

With more than 8 million owners, a satisfaction rate of 85 percent, and an occupancy rate that outpaced hotel occupancy by more than 20 percent, it is clear that this segment of the travel industry is faring well. Take the time to find out why. Visit www.VacationBetter.org for more information.?

Next month, look for vacation memories from Starwood Vacation owners who are passionate about their timeshare. All timeshare fans are invited to tell their story here..?

About Timeshare
Timeshare and vacation ownership are often used as interchangeable terms. Timeshare may be purchased through deeded property ownership, right-to-use, or a points-based program. Owners purchase a villa, usually in one-week increments, within a fixed (same week each year) or ?floating? system. Floating time allows the owner to schedule each year?s vacation for the desired week within a specified season.?

About ARDA
The American Resort Development Association (ARDA) is the Washington D.C.-based professional association representing the vacation ownership and resort development industries. Established in 1969, ARDA today has almost 1,000 members ranging from privately held firms to publicly traded companies and international corporations with expertise in shared ownership interests in leisure real estate. The membership also includes timeshare owner associations (HOAs), resort management companies, and owners through the ARDA Resort Owners Coalition (ARDA-ROC).

Background On November 13, 2011, Mexican Economy Secretary Bruno Ferrari stated Mexico?s intention to begin consultations with the current TPP participating countries regarding Mexico?s participation in the TPP negotiations. On December 7, 2011, USTR published notices in the Federal Register (76 FR 76479), seeking public comments on Mexico?s possible participation in the TPP negotiations. On July 9, 2012, following consultations with relevant Congressional committees and after having reached consensus on Mexico?s participation with the other TPP negotiating partners (Australia, Brunei Darussalam, Chile, Malaysia, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore and Vietnam), the U.S. Trade Representative informed Congress that the President intends to commence negotiations with Mexico in the context of the ongoing negotiations of the TPP. The objective of this negotiation is to achieve a highstandard, 21st century agreement with a membership and coverage that provides economically significant market access opportunities for America?s workers, manufacturers, service suppliers, farmers, ranchers, and small businesses. The addition of Mexico to the group of TPP negotiating partners will contribute meaningfully to the achievement of these goals. In addition, under the Trade Act of 1974, as amended (19 U.S.C. 2151, 2153), in the case of an agreement such as the proposed TPP trade agreement, the President must (i) afford interested E:\FR\FM\23JYN1.SGM 23JYN1 43134 Federal Register / Vol. 77, No. 141 / Monday, July 23, 2012 / Notices mstockstill on DSK4VPTVN1PROD with NOTICES persons an opportunity to present their views regarding any matter relevant to the proposed agreement, (ii) designate an agency or inter-agency committee to hold a public hearing regarding the proposed agreement, and (iii) seek the advice of the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) regarding the probable economic effects on U.S. industries and consumers of the removal of tariffs and non-tariff barriers on imports pursuant to the proposed agreement. USTR intends to hold a public hearing on matters related to Mexico?s participation in the TPP negotiations on September 21, 2012. In addition, USTR has requested the ITC to provide advice to USTR on the probable economic effects of including Mexico in a TPP agreement. 2. Public Comments To assist USTR as it develops its negotiating objectives for the agreement, the Trade Policy Subcommittee Chair invites interested persons to submit written comments and/or oral testimony at a public hearing on matters relevant to Mexico?s participation in the TPP negotiations. Members of the public who submitted comments in response to the earlier request (76 FR 76479) need not make an additional submission unless the comments are different. The TPSC Chair invites comments on all of these matters and, in particular, seeks comments addressed to: (a) General and product-specific negotiating objectives for Mexico in the context of this proposed regional agreement. (b) Economic costs and benefits to U.S. producers and consumers of removal of tariffs and removal or reduction in non-tariff barriers on articles traded with Mexico. (e) Existing sanitary and phytosanitary measures and technical barriers to trade imposed by Mexico that should be addressed in the negotiations. (f) Existing barriers to trade in services between the United States and Mexico that should be addressed in the negotiations. The Chair of the Trade Policy Staff Committee (TSPC) invites comments regarding how Mexico?s participation in the negotiations might affect these new approaches. The TPSC Chair also invites comments on the impact of Mexico?s participation in the negotiations on other trade-related priorities in this regional agreement, including environmental protection and conservation, transparency, workers rights and protections, development, and other issues. It costs $100 less than the 4S, and it works with a $35/month data plan. But at $549 up front, there's still too wide a price gap between it and Virgin's Android phone lineup.

The iPhone 4 on Virgin Mobile is the same model Sprint and Verizon offer, running on Sprint's network. Read our Verizon iPhone 4 ($99, 4 stars) review for details. (The Verizon iPhone 4 is pictured in the slideshow below.) The main differences between the iPhone 4 and the iPhone 4S ($649, 3.5 stars), which costs $100 more, are the latter has a faster dual-core processor, a better camera, and the Siri voice assistant.

We generally recommend that you buy the 4S because over the two years most people own their phones, the $100 isn't a huge price difference. And the iPhone 4 already won't get some of the features in the new upcoming iOS 6: For instance, you won't get turn-by-turn navigation or FaceTime over 3G.

But the iPhone 4 is still an excellent device, largely because of its sharp Retina display and iOS. The application library available in Apple's App Store is just terrific, with a huge number of attractive, well-polished apps. And the platform has always been easy to use.

A Really Cheap iPhone
Here's how the math works out: The $549.99 8GB iPhone 4S on Virgin Mobile works with the carrier's $35/month Beyond Talk plan, which offers 300 minutes of talk and 2.5GB of 3G data. Virgin, thrillingly, has no contracts, so you can switch out your phone any time you want.

Measured over two years, Virgin's iPhone 4 is much cheaper than competing plans from Sprint, Verizon, or AT&T. The Virgin iPhone with the $35/month plan costs $1,389.99 over two years. Sprint's model is cheaper up front at $99.99 but requires an $80/month plan with a two-year contract, so it's $2,019.99. AT&T's and Verizon's service plans are even more expensive.

Cricket sells the iPhone 4 for $399.99 with a $55/month plan, making it $1,719.99 over two years, but Cricket's iPhone is only offered in a limited number of cities. Virgin sells its iPhones nationwide.

And remember, you get the same nationwide performance as Sprint. That has its up sides and its down sides. The up side is a relatively consistent network. The down side is the slowest 3G network in the nation, as measured by our 30-city network speed tests. Since the iPhone doesn't support any form of 4G, you're stuck in the slow lane.

Virgin's iPhone 4 Costs Too Much
The iPhone is a brilliant cultural touchstone with an unmatched library of high-quality apps. But you'll be paying too much of a premium over other Virgin phones to enjoy it.

The Editors' Choice HTC EVO V 4G (4 stars) is $299.99 with the same service plan. That's a $250 savings for a fast Android 4.0 phone with a similar-resolution screen, dual-core processor and lots of apps. (Ignore the 3D stuff, it's a gimmick.)?

Most importantly, the EVO V 4G can hit Clearwire's WiMAX network. If you live in a city where that's available, it's a huge speed difference. When we tested the EVO V 4G, we found the 4G network to be up to eight times as fast as the 3G network.

The HTC One V costs $100 less. It's $350 less than the iPhone. Consider the One V the "iPhone 4" to the EVO V 4G's "iPhone 4S."? It's a lower-powered phone, with a single-core processor and no 4G, but it's also elegant and runs Android 4.0.

The iPhone deserves to be in the top rank of smartphones, but it isn't $350 better than the HTC One V. This isn't even the top of the line iPhone, although you're paying a top-of-the-line price when compared to phones on other platforms.

If you really want to run iOS apps, remember that you can also run them on an iPod touch ($199.99, 5 stars), although that device has no built-in 3G capability.

Conclusions
The Virgin Mobile iPhone 4 is the least expensive iPhone model available, if you factor in the cost of the service plan. But while it's a good phone, like its sibling the 4S on Virgin, it's just much too expensive than other good phones on the market. Prices may drop after a new iPhone comes out this fall, though.?Apple made its mark in the wireless world by providing a high-quality product at a competitive price. These no-contract iPhones only qualify if you think no other phone competes.

TORONTO - Launching a career can be tricky when saddled with student debt, but borrowing to finance school may be unavoidable for some students ? and for those who don't qualify for government assistance, the added interest costs can be crippling.

Candace Simms, an English and political science major at Memorial University in St. John's, N.L., says that despite working multiple jobs through school, she will have to put off grad school to pay down her $15,000 credit line and $1,000 credit card debt.

"It's terrifying," says the fifth-year student, who plans to continue on to her master's and PhD. "It's going to be years before I can buy a house or start a family."

Simms, who doesn't qualify for government student aid, says she expects to have between $30,000 and $50,000 of debt by the time she's ready to start her career.

"The current formula for student aid is broken," says Simms, 23. "It takes a black and white approach to everything and that's not the case. So many students are in one of those grey areas."

Average tuition in Canada was $5,366 last year, and average student debt at graduation climbed to $18,800 in 2005 ? the latest year for which statistics are available ? from $15,200 a decade earlier.

Many students find themselves turning to credit cards and lines of credit because they aren't eligible for student aid, which is determined using a formula that takes into account how much their parents should be able to contribute.

Financial advisers offer these tips for the cash-strapped student looking for ways to fund school.

1. Exhaust your options

Taking on debt from a financial institution should always be your last choice after all other options have failed, says Kurt Rosentreter, a financial adviser with Manulife Securities.

"You can't be 30 years old with $50,000 to $100,000 in student debt and hope to get started on your real-life goals any time soon," said Rosentreter.

"If you're going to take on so much debt that effectively it's going to make the rest of your long-term goals impossible, I think you need to dwell on that, and even contemplate how much school you're going to take."

Consider taking on several part-time jobs or stretching out your degree over a longer period of time to avoid getting deep into the red, says Rosentreter.

When possible, choose student aid over a term loan or a credit line from a financial institution because government loans are interest free while you're in school and for six months after you graduate.

Think about borrowing money from family, who can make you sign legal documents if they're worried about repayment.

2. Be realistic about your budget

Tom Lumsden, director of education financing at RBC, urges students to create a realistic budget so they understand the full cost of going to school, including living expenses.

Doing so can prevent you from running out of money prematurely.

"Next to your home, this is the biggest financial investment that you're going to make in yourself, so you need to make sure that you do the homework on what you really need," says Lumsden.

"Unexpected things happen, and if you've got a budget and you're prepared you can usually work your way through the rough patch."

Make sure you also look into average salaries and future job prospects in your chosen field of employment, says Rosentreter.

"It's kind of ironic because you're talking about going into debt to get education to get a better job," he says.

"But if you take on so much debt and the education doesn't get you the sweet job you need to repay the debt, you could dig a bigger hole."

3. Pick a line of credit over a term loan

A credit line is more suitable for students because it allows you to draw out money gradually as you need it, rather than receiving all the cash in one big chunk that starts accumulating interest immediately.

A student line of credit also allows more flexibility in repaying the money, whereas a term loan has fixed payment dates.

And with a line of credit, you only pay interest on what you borrow, so if you don't withdraw all your money at once then you end up saving on interest.

Lumsden suggests working each summer to pay down the line of credit, so you can graduate with less debt.

4. Choose flexibility over low interest rates

The most important feature to look for in a line of credit is flexibility in getting the money and in paying it back, says Rosentreter.

Your repayment terms should extend over many years as your career takes off, says Rosentreter.

"If you have to pay a slightly higher interest rate to get the flexibility you need, I would do that," says Rosentreter.

Sometimes securing your line of credit behind an asset ? like your parents' house or an investment account ? can get you a lower interest rate because the lender doesn't take on as much risk, says Rosentreter.

5. Be careful with credit cards

While turning to credit cards can be easy when you're in need of quick cash, those cards can have exorbitant interest rates, says Rosentreter.

And piling on the cards as you max each one out can be detrimental to your credit rating, he adds.

"Interest rates on those credit cards can be among the highest in the world," says Rosentreter.

"Unless you're aggressively paying those cards down, you could head towards personal bankruptcy real fast."
