3 Tips For Explosive Downline Growth In Your Network Marketing ...

If you?re new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

What do you think it takes to build a powerful and profitable network marketing business?

What do you need to do to have explosive downline growth for your business?

Effort?? Hard work?? Strategic thinking?

You can put as much effort and hard work as you want to but if you don?t have a solid strategy then you are going to see very slow growth.

What is the whole point of network marketing? To leverage the time and effort of other people to generate a 5-6 figure monthly income?..in other words, to become filthy rich.

The once famous billionaire J. Paul Getty Said

I?d rather have 1% of the effort of 100 men than 100% of my own effort.

Robert Kiyosaki is dead on when he says

The richest people in the world?look?for and?build networks, everyone else?looks for work.

The word leverage is the sweetest word to the rich. ?Learn the power of leverage and have it become part of your daily vocabulary. ?Focus on the big picture and visualize having a deep downline. ?Once you recruit enough people you?ll have a couple of ?MLM All-Stars who will start recruiting by the masses. ?Before you know it you?ll have a team of massive distributors across the country growing your team without much effort from you. ?Focus on this picture because what you think about you bring about. ?Eliminate any self defeating thoughts and think of only the things you desire and all of the people you help along the way.

With that being said I?ve listed ways you can leverage your efforts to start generating the income you expected when you first became a network marketing distributor. There are plenty of ways to leverage and I?m listing only what I believe are the top 3 ways.

Tip #1 ? Build Your Email List

This goes beyond common sense yet only a very few in MLM are doing this. ?Maybe it?s because they?associate?it to affiliate marketing where they have to write months and months of pre-written emails promoting an info product or service. ? The reason to utilize a personal email list is to have communication with the people who have expressed interest in what you have to offer. ?It only makes sense to give something of value in exchange for their permission to personally contact them everyday. ?If you run a blog (which you should do because your company replicated website will not make you stand out) you can email your list with a synopsis of your latest article and direct them back to your site. ?This way they can know, like and trust you because we all know that people join people and not opportunities.

Tip #2 ? Utilize Third Party Tools

This is where a lot of network marketers go wrong. ?They say too much when first contacting a prospect and end up losing them before they?re sent off to watch a?presentation. ?When first talking to a prospect you want to ask questions to find out their wants, needs and desires. ?Let them do all of the talking. Control the conversation by asking trigger questions then keep your mouth closed and turn on your ears. Keep it under three minutes and if they?re someone you can work?with, invite them to watch your company?s?presentation. Let that do the selling for you. ?If they have questions as most of them will, call one of the leaders in your upline to do a three way call if you?re unclear on how to answer a question. ?Your job is to market and promote your product and use all resources and third party tools to do the selling for you. ?

This should be your daily routine:

  1. Prospect ? Ask people daily if their open to generating extra income (10 people if your full time, 5 people if you?re part time)
  2. Invite ? Send them to see what your?opportunity?has to offer (company?presentation)
  3. Follow Up ? Confirm a time to talk after they?ve reviewed all the information about your opportunity. Answer their questions and if needed, validate with a three way call with one of your upline leaders
  4. Enroll ? Now that they?ve joined you and your business, all you do is teach them how to do the same (steps 1-3)

It cannot be any simpler. ?Become a master inviter and let the tools do the selling for you. This will definitely help you explode the growth of your downline.

Tip #3 ? Use A Sales Funnel

This will increase your income by 20% if you?re not doing this already. ?You want to have a front end product such as a high?quality?info product (ebook, video training series, etc) that you can retail under $50. ?Or have a resource page advertising the tools and services you use to help run your business. You?ll collect affiliate?commissions?on the services or products from those you have referred. ?These two methods allow you to?subsidize?your advertising cost so you can drive targeted visitors to your website. ?You can scale this as your business grows but the main goal of your front end profit is to break even on the advertising cost. This allows you to have a budget so you can expose your back end product, aka? your business opportunity.

This tip is extremely important?because?without any leads you don?t have a business. ?People forget that starting a network?marketing?business?is just that, it?s a business and you MUST have an advertising budget when starting out. ?Once you start to break even your?advertising?cost is ?free? but you must spend money on advertising your first 6 months. Once you start scaling your advertising according to the growth of your business, you?ll be able to drive a ton more traffic to your website and you will start to notice the explosive downline growth in your network marketing business.

Chocolate Cake Judging - Mcall.com: Blogging with Bill White Blog

August 28, 2012

Total People in Discussion: 1

Cake??? The Allentown Fair opens tonight, and that means I'll be judging chocolate cakes again in the Pennsylvania Preferred Chocolate Cake contest. This is one of these gigs that makes everyone envious, but I can tell you that tasting a couple of dozen chocolate cakes is more grueling than it sounds.

??? ?? Invariably, I end up staggering out of there in no shape to do my real work of the evening -- trudging around the fairgrounds on Preview Night to investigate the freak shows, dunk tank and other attractions, not to mention eating my traditional Vince's cheesesteak. Chocolate shock is not conducive to a lot of walking.

????? I'm actually in that file photo above. You can see the back of my Hawaian shirt and my bald spot right behind the red-haired judge. (One of my fellow judges, WLEV radio personality Laura St. James, also posted an enticing photo from one of the past contests. You can see it here.)

????? I know people envy us for this job, because the contest always draws a mob of freeloaders waiting for the samples at the end. I don't blame them. If I only had to eat one piece of chocolate cake, I'd be out there, too. But it is possible to have too much of a good thing.

???? Actually, I'm on a food judging roll. I was one of the judges for Sunday afternoon's ArtsQuest Appetizer Bowl at SteelStacks, and I'll be judging peach desserts Saturday evening at the fair. It's tough work, but someone has to do it.

Video Game Reviews | Persona 4 Arena | RotoRob

There was a time during my gaming lifecycle that I was fascinated by one-on-one fighters. Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter topped the list, but I also enjoyed Dead or Alive, Tekken, Soul Calibur and more. However, as the saying goes: that was then, this is now. Fighting titles have taken a back seat (way back) to other genres in recent years, and thus Atlus? recent release, Persona 4 Arena, faced an uphill battle to rekindle my interest. Was it equal to the task? Read on.

CONTROLS (4.5/5)

Old-school fighting mechanics are alive and well in Persona 4 Arena with lots of double tapping and analog stick (or d-pad) manipulation on the docket. It typically works well, though when asked to push one direction then another quickly, I wouldn?t always get the desired result. The face buttons are split into weak/strong individual strikes and weak/strong attacks from your persona.

Pressing the face buttons in pairs triggers more powerful attacks, and there are even moves that require you to hit three of them simultaneously. The three-button moves proved to be exceptionally tough for me to pull off, even in the Lesson Mode (read: tutorial), as it felt like I was pretty much enveloping the controller with my hand.

Beyond the fundamentals, each character also has a series of unique signature attacks, most of which are unleashed via a combination of stick movements and button presses. To prevent spamming, the more powerful moves are tied to various gauges on the screen, and some of them can only be used when you have absorbed a lot of damage.

There is a lot to learn and assimilate here, so if you?re new to the series I highly recommend going through the Lesson Mode a couple of times to get a preliminary handle on things ? even then, expect to take some lumps from the A.I. and in bouts against other players. After a while things will begin to click, but be warned that the battle system does not embrace button mashers.

GRAPHICS/SOUND (4.25/5)

Whether you?re an anime fan or not, it?s difficult not to appreciate the quality of the hand drawn sprites coupled with the sheer amount of special effects going on during bouts. It?s exceptionally colourful and vibrant, and you?d be forgiven if early on you were to find yourself watching matches unfold as much as actively countering moves. Sure, it can be a little overwhelming at first, but you?ll become accustomed to the perpetual motion in short order. Dialogue sequences and the occasional cut scene are solid, even if they don?t match the same standards as the fights.

A catchy, surprisingly diverse mix of tracks gives Persona 4 Arena a perfect audio complement to the game?s gorgeous visuals. The voice acting is also better than expected, though if you don?t care for that anime voiceover style it may not click. I enjoyed most of it, but some of the stuff is over the top to the point of being goofy (I?m looking at you and your ?un-bear-able? puns, Teddie).

GAMEPLAY (4.25/5)

There was a time when fighting games came packaged with just two modes: versus the computer and versus a friend. Compared to that, Persona 4 Arena offers an absolute ton of content, starting with what has to be the most robust story mode ever seen in a fighter.

Written as a follow up to the Persona 4 RPG, Story Mode initially allows you to guide one of four characters before eventually opening up for a total of 10. The characters? stories each tell a piece of a larger narrative, intertwining and filling in gaps as you continue to play through them. Having never played the RPG I was unfamiliar with the back story, but the game does a pretty good job of bringing you up to speed about the Investigation Team, Midnight Channel and other important elements.

Whether or not non-Persona fans will want to invest the time in Story Mode is an interesting question as each character?s journey is a lengthy one, full of written blocks of text and voice acting. In fact, I?d say the ratio is probably 20-to-30 minutes of storytelling for every minute of actual fighting action. If that sounds like something you?d enjoy you can look forward to 20-plus hours of material, assuming you don?t skip conversations. And if not, well, there are plenty of other modes to tickle your fancy.

Arcade Mode has you fight your way through the roster in classic win-and-advance fashion, while the aptly named Score Attack tasks you with compiling as many points as possible in the process.?There is also a Challenge Mode to test your combo mettle with each of the 13 characters needing to pull off 30 different combinations to complete the challenge. Local and online matches round out the offerings, with the online bouts running exceptionally smoothly following the release of a patch.

Ultimately, though, fighting games are not judged by the amount of available content, but rather by the quality of the matches themselves. On that front, Persona 4 Arena delivers gameplay that is both accessible to newer players and nuanced enough to appeal to hardcore aficionados.

Perhaps the biggest factor in appealing to newcomers is that all 13 characters share common controls for their various moves. Unlike a Street Fighter or a Mortal Kombat where diverse move sets must be memorized for competency, here learning how to execute one character?s moves allows you to pull them off with others as well. Plus, some of the simpler combos can be done simply by properly timing a series of identical button presses, so you shouldn?t feel completely outmatched.

That being said, the game definitely tilts toward more seasoned gamers as most of the game?s best moves are hidden behind combined stick/button inputs and multi-layer combinations. There is also some strategy to take into account involving the use of personas, which can be temporarily lost if they absorb too much damage, and the management of the SP and burst meters.

OVERALL (4.25/5)

Beautifully rendered and teeming with content, Persona 4 Arena would make an excellent addition to any fighting fan?s collection. The learning curve is a bit steep, but serious players should find that they?ll get out of it what they put into it.

Scientists reveal how river blindness worm thrives

ScienceDaily (Aug. 22, 2012) ? Scientists at the University of Liverpool have found that the worm which causes River Blindness survives by using a bacterium to provide energy, as well as help 'trick' the body's immune system into thinking it is fighting a different kind of infection.

River Blindness affects 37 million people, mainly in sub-Saharan Africa, causing intense itching of the skin, visual impairment and in severe cases, irreversible blindness. It is caused by a parasitic worm that is transmitted by blood-feeding blackflies, which breed in fast-flowing rivers.

The team at Liverpool investigated a bacteria carried by the worm, called Wolbachia, which if removed by antibiotics, kills the adult worm and cures River Blindness. To understand why the worms need these bacteria to survive, scientists sequenced the genome of Wolbachia from a closely related parasite in cattle.

They found that the bacteria could provide the worm with energy through a process that needs iron and oxygen, similar to cell energy processes in the human body. The bacteria can also 'trick' the body's immune response into believing it is dealing with a bacterial rather than worm infection, making it difficult for the body to fight the disease.

Research findings could help target drugs at disabling the bacteria's energy-giving properties, which may provide shorter treatment regimes for River Blindness. Understanding the bacteria's ability to misdirect the human immune response could also contribute to work into vaccine development.

Dr Ben Makepeace, from the University of Liverpool's Institute of Infection and Global Health, said: "River Blindness is a major problem in tropical regions of Africa, where a similar parasite can also be found in cattle. Antibiotics have shown promise in critical trials, but treatment can be a long process for a patient, and so it is important for us to find new ways of combating the disease to improve patient welfare.

"It was a team at Liverpool that first discovered antibiotics could kill the bacteria inside these particular worms. The findings led us to believe that the bacteria played a crucial role in keeping the parasite alive. Sequencing the genome revealed that it could give the worm energy to survive and help 'fool' the host's immune response into believing it had to tackle a bacterial infection.

"We also studied, for the first time, which bacterial genes were switched on and off in different parts of the worm, and identified the kinds of proteins made by Wolbachia. We hope our research will contribute to shorter treatment programmes and potentially impact on the search for a vaccine."

Woody Harrelson's quirky play to extend its run

NEW YORK (AP) ? Woody Harrelson's play "Bullet for Adolf" is extending its off-Broadway run by more than a month and the actor-turned-playwright is hopeful it will continue building an audience.

"Nobody does theater for the money, on the other hand, an eventual profit would be lovely," Harrelson told The Associated Press in an email exchange. "Word-of-mouth accounts for 90 percent of people at the show and the audience is building every week so I'm optimistic."

The comedy was co-written by Harrelson and old friend Frankie Hyman and has a semi-autobiographical plot that sprang from true events and unusual people the pair encountered while working construction jobs in the summer of 1983 in Houston.

The eight-person play, also directed by Harrelson, opened in August at the New World Stages complex on 50th Street and has been losing money. It was originally scheduled to play its final performance on Sept. 9, but the production will now be gambling that more time will create a bigger response. Producers said Thursday it will now play through Oct. 21.

"Bullet for Adolf" is peppered with one-liners, vulgar insults and politically incorrect jokes about racism, ethnicity, pedophilia, the Holocaust and even different cultures' uses of placenta.

The play got mixed reviews off-Broadway, with The New York Times calling the play "muddled" and loud, while The Associated Press said it is "an engaging, high-energy comedy that will surely entertain more than it offends."

The former "Cheers" star waved away the criticism, seeing positive signs: "Our goal in writing this play was to make people laugh. As long as people keep laughing we're going to keep it going."

"I think Frankie and I were pretty clear that this play wouldn't be for everyone," he wrote. "The play goes to some pretty wild places and has some very strong language and edgy jokes. We were 21 and on our own for the first time and that's how we were that summer of 1983. This play is not for the humorless."

"Bullet for Adolf," which takes its name from the appearance of a gun once used in an attempt to kill Adolf Hitler, received its world premiere last spring at the Hart House Theatre in Toronto.

Harrelson said he'd like to take the play to London, but there are no plans for that yet. He and Hyman are focused on building an audience in New York, "especially those who have been away for the summer."

'Electronic nose' prototype developed: Device has applications in agriculture, industry, homeland security and the military

ScienceDaily (Aug. 21, 2012) ? Research by Nosang Myung, a professor at the University of California, Riverside, Bourns College of Engineering, has enabled a Riverside company to develop an "electronic nose" prototype that can detect small quantities of harmful airborne substances.

Nano Engineered Applications, Inc., an Innovation Economy Corporation company, has completed the prototype which is based on intellectual property exclusively licensed from the University of California. The device has potential applications in agriculture (detecting pesticide levels), industrial sites (detecting gas leaks, combustion emissions), homeland security (warning systems for bio-terrorism) and the military (detecting chemical warfare agents).

"This is a really important step," Myung said. "The prototype clearly shows that our research at the university has applications in industry."

Steve Abbott, president of Nano Engineered Applications, Inc., which is designing the product and expects to begin selling it within a year, said the company is now focused on writing software related to the device and working to make it smaller.

At present, it's about four inches by seven inches. The goal is to make it the size of a credit card. At that size, a multi-channel sensor would be able to detect up to eight toxins. A single-channel sensor device could be the size of a fingernail.

Nano Engineered Applications is now looking to collaborate with companies that could bring the production version to market, Abbott said. He believes the product will initially be commercialized on the industrial side for monitoring such things as gas and toxin leaks, and emissions.

The key to the prototype is the nanosensor array that Myung started developing eight years ago. It uses functionalized carbon nanotubes, which are 100,000 times finer than human hair, to detect airborne toxins down to the parts per billion level.

The prototype also includes a computer chip, USB ports, and temperature and humidity sensors. Version 2 of the prototype, due out in 30 days, will integrate a GPS device and a Bluetooth unit to sync it with a smart phone. The development team is evaluating if adding Wi-Fi capabilities will add value.

The unit is designed to be incorporated in three basic platforms: a handheld device, a wearable device and in a smart phone. Different platforms will be used depending on the application.

For example, a handheld unit could be used for environmental monitoring, such as a gas spill. A wearable unit could be used for a children's asthma study in which the researcher wants to monitor air quality. A smart phone unit could be used by public safety officials to detect a potentially harmful airborne agent.

In the past year, Nano Engineered Applications, Inc. has provided financial support to Myung's research. Of that, a portion went toward naming Myung's lab the Innovation Economy Corporation Laboratory.

Swift to perform at VMAs, US gymnasts to present

NEW YORK (AP) ? Six-time Grammy winner Taylor Swift will perform at the 2012 MTV Video Music Awards next month. But she won't be the only gold winner in the room.

The U.S. Women's Gymnastics team ? known as the Fierce Five ? will be presenters at the Sept. 6 show. Gabby Douglas, McKayla Maroney, Alexandra Raisman, Kyla Ross and Jordyn Wieber won the women's team gold medal at the Olympics this month and have been on a whirlwind tour ever since that included the couches of Jay Leno and David Letterman. Douglas, Maroney and Raisman also won individual medals.

Miley Cyrus, rapper Wiz Khalifa and alternative hip-hop artist Mac Miller will also present awards.

Drake and Rihanna lead with five nominations each. They'll battle Katy Perry, M.I.A. and Gotye for video of the year.

Swift was at the center of one of the award show's most memorable moments, when Kanye West hijacked her acceptance speech at the MTV Video Music Awards in 2009.

Swift said she will perform a new song from her coming fourth studio album at the awards show.

"It's such a different song than anything I've ever put out before," she says in a video promo for the awards.

Swift's first single from her forthcoming album "Red" set a digital sales record for a female artist. Swift sold 623,000 copies of "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," according to Nielsen SoundScan, after announcing the Oct. 22 release of her album last week.

Comedian Kevin Hart will host the VMAs live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. Performers include Green Day, Alicia Keys, Pink and One Direction.

RAPID CITY, S.D. (AP) ? Wynonna Judd's husband has lost his leg after a motorcycle crash in South Dakota.

Michael Scott "Cactus" Moser was riding a motorcycle on U.S. Highway 16 in the Black Hills on Saturday when he crossed the center line and hit a car. He was airlifted to a hospital.

A representative for Judd said Monday that Moser's leg was "severed at the scene of the accident" and that doctors have amputated his leg above his knee. Moser has also had surgery on his hand.

Judd is postponing scheduled concerts in Canada as a result. Moser is a resident of Nashville, Tenn., and the drummer in the country singer's band.

The statement says the couple appreciates the "well-wishes from family, friends and fans."

Rising gas prices not a big concern for voters

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Even as President Barack Obama considers using U.S. oil stockpiles to halt rising gasoline costs in an election year, a Reuters/Ipsos poll released on Tuesday shows economic pain at the pump is not a big concern for voters.

Fuel and gas prices ranked last among 10 factors that influence voters in evaluating Obama's job performance and the country's direction, the poll found. Healthcare, the economy and jobs top the list, with gas prices also lagging behind foreign policy, immigration and education.

"Gas prices, relative to the rest of this stuff, are much less important," Ipsos pollster Chris Jackson said.

"People talk a lot about how gas prices drive attitudes, but it doesn't seem to have a lot of impact either on Obama's job approval or how people see the country going," he said. "People seem to see gas prices as a separate issue the government doesn't have as much control over."

Gasoline prices, which had eased after the national average peaked at $3.94 a gallon in April, have climbed again in the last month and hit an average $3.72 a gallon on Monday.

Worried about high prices, the White House is considering a release of oil reserves from the U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve, Reuters reported last week.

The United States and other Group of Eight nations studied a potential oil release in the spring but shelved the plans. Crude oil prices have surged in recent weeks - Brent Crude is closing in on $115 a barrel compared to below $90 a barrel in June - and a U.S. domestic supply shortage also has contributed to the rise.

The release of oil reserves could prevent high crude prices from undermining sanctions against Iran over its nuclear program.

A POLITICAL GESTURE

But it also would be criticized by Republicans as a political gesture designed to win votes in the November 6 election that pits Obama against Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

Romney has attacked Obama's economic leadership and touted his own business record as proof that he can create jobs and turn around a struggling economy. Yet the former governor of Massachusetts has not focused on gasoline prices in the four months since prices topped out.

Even if Romney takes up the issue, voters might not be receptive. The Ipsos poll, taken online between July 1 and August 17, found healthcare and the economy were nearly twice as important to voters as gas prices when they considered Obama's job performance and whether the country was on the right track.

For 26 percent of the poll's respondents, gas prices were a factor in their view of Obama's job performance. Healthcare was a factor in his approval rating for 55 percent of the public, and jobs were a factor for 44 percent.

"People really do seem to understand how little control the president has over the price of gasoline," Jackson said.

"While people may be upset about the price of gas, they realize it may not be something they can blame Obama for directly," he said. "The economy and jobs do seem to be something they think he has more influence over."

Jackson said gas prices could have an impact on the election "at the margins, and since the election is so close even marginal things might end up being important, but it's not one of the major factors."

He said the poll also found little change in views about gas prices since July 1 as prices have risen, but if they climb above $4 a gallon that could shift.

"The $4 a gallon barrier is definitely a much more significant psychological barrier," he said. "If that is breached, it could become more significant."

The precision of the Reuters/Ipsos online poll is measured using a credibility interval. This poll of more than 12,000 Americans had a credibility interval of plus or minus 1.1 percentage points.

Two Kids' Rooms in a Brooklyn Brownstone Home By Novogratz ...

Kids' rooms are so fun to decorate because you get to turn up the colors, turn down the seriousness, and break the rules. Sure, the room can still reflect the personality of the parents, but it's like a fun house mirror reflection: bold, bright, and silly. And you may as well go all out, because it's only a matter of time until the kids start to undo your design and put their own stamp on their space anyway. If you have a hard time letting go of your design inhibitions, take a look at these two kid rooms that Bob and Cortney Novogratz designed in Park Slope.

The really fun thing about these rooms is how the Novos referenced the historical details of the early 1900s brownstone but tweaked them into something modern and playful. The fireplaces, the woodwork, and the bay windows immediately let you know that these rooms aren't in a mid-century rancher, so Bob and Cortney used tons of funny twists on classics to make the spaces pop.

The boys' room got kelly green toile wallpaper and navy blue toile window treatments, because if you're going to go toile, you may as well go toiles out. And the green print made for an awesome basketball hoop backboard, too.

The girl's room got wallpaper in a classic bird pattern. But Cortney (or maybe it was Major?) picked out two different colors for the wallpaper and hung them in vertical stripes. And the window treatments are granny chic lace with a hilarious pom pom fringe trim. Maybe I'm the only one who thinks pom pom fringe can be hilarious, but on lace? That made me smile. For as many times as I've been to the fabric store, I've never walked out with lace and pom pom fringe in the same bag, but Cortney stepped into Mood and walked out with the funniest window treatments I've ever seen.

And let's not forget the most obvious super cranked up design juxtaposition in the rooms: those beautiful chandeliers backed by ceilings that look like 10 foot long Jolly Ranchers. Shiny and saturated, those ceiling colors are the icing on the cake.

Bookworm Room ? Watcher's Council forum on illegal immigration

The Watcher asked ?Do you consider Illegal migration to America a problem, and if so, what would you do about the estimated 11 million illegal aliens already here??? Not only did some of the Council members have an opinion on this one (or, given all of our busy lives, manage to meet the deadline), a few special guests responded too.

Here?s what I had to say, but I very much urge you to read the other responses, most of which make mine look pretty shallow:

The problem isn?t the number of illegal aliens ? or, at least, the main problem isn?t the number of illegal aliens. The problem arises when our federal government boldly countenances and supports illegal activity. Ours has always been a nation of laws. Laws provide reliability, stability, justice, and equal opportunities. This is the covenant between the people and the government as explained in the Declaration of Independence and made manifest in the Constitution. Betraying this trust bespeaks a fundamental failure in the relationship between our federal government, which is responsible for using the people?s representatives to enact the laws and the people?s executive to enforce them. The free flow of illegal aliens across the borders ? regardless of whether they?re people searching for a better life for their families, helpless young children, or hardened criminals ? is a gaping hole in the existential fabric of a constitutional democracy.

So yes, I do consider illegal migration to America to be a problem. As to what to do with the estimated 11 million illegal aliens already here, that?s a more vexing practical problem. Ethically, I?d like to deport all of them, but I know that?s almost impossible to do and (yes, even a conservative gets this) that doing so is a humane problem. I would draw an admittedly arbitrary bright line (because there are no non-arbitrary lines) in the sand and say that those who have been here more than five years will get a temporary green card and must immediately put themselves on the waiting list (no priority) to become a legal resident. Those staying under the green card would then have all the legal rights and responsibilities of any other green card residents ? and no greater rights. Those who have been here less than five years would get deported, but without prejudice to put themselves on the waiting list.

As for that waiting list, if the U.S. really needs the cheap labor illegal immigrants provide, then the laws should be changed ASAP to admit more legal immigrants. If we?ve been lying about the necessity of cheap labor, we need to be honest about that with the American public. Incidentally, lowering taxes, especially employment taxes, might reveal that the only virtue of illegal labor has been the ability to pay illegal immigrants under the table.

When it comes to hard work, the illegal immigrant population is, for the most part, an admirable one. I hope I make it clear that my concern about illegal immigrants has to do with the integrity of the American social, economic, and political contract, and not with any animus towards those Hispanics who come here. As I?ve argued before, they?re reasonable to leave their often dysfunctional economies. I?ve also argued that, by countenancing illegal immigration, we immorally provide a safety valve to those dysfunctional, usually corrupt, countries from which they come.

Neural interface for hand prosthesis can restore function in brain areas responsible for motor control

ScienceDaily (Aug. 20, 2012) ? Amputation disrupts not only the peripheral nervous system but also central structures of the brain. While the brain is able to adapt and compensate for injury in certain conditions, in amputees the traumatic event prevents adaptive cortical changes. A group of scientists reports adaptive plastic changes in an amputee's brain following implantation of multielectrode arrays inside peripheral nerves.

Their results are available in the current issue of Restorative Neurology and Neuroscience.

"We found that a neurally-interfaced hand prosthesis re-established communication between the central and peripheral nervous systems, not only restructuring the areas directly responsible for motor control but also their functional balance within the bi-hemispheric system necessary for motor control," says lead investigator Camillo Porcaro, PhD, of the Institute of Neuroscience, Newcastle University, Medical School, Newcastle upon Tyne, UK and the Institute of Cognitive Sciences and Technologies (ISTC) -- National Research Council (CNR).

A 26-year old male with a left arm amputation was implanted with four microelectrode arrays in the ulnar and median nerves of his stump for four weeks. Prior to implantation, he was trained for two weeks by video to perform three specific movements with his phantom hand. During the experimental period, he underwent intensive training to control a hand prosthesis using the implanted microelectrodes to perform the same hand grip tasks. Together with visual feedback from the prosthesis, the patient received sensory feedback from an experimenter, who delivered electrical pulses to the nerves activated by each movement. EEG signals were recorded as the patient moved his right hand and the prosthesis.

The patient's right hand movement showed clear activation of the primary sensory and motor areas for right hand movement, on the left side of the brain. Prior to implantation, commands to move the phantom left hand triggered the primary sensory and motor areas on the left side of the brain, and the pre-motor and supplementary motor cortices on both sides of the brain. No primary motor cortex movement was found on the right side of the brain, as would be expected.

After the four weeks of prosthesis motor control training with implanted microelectrodes, cerebral activation changed markedly. Cortical recruitment became almost symmetrical with right hand movements. The presence of intra-fascicular electrodes allowed new signals to be delivered through peripheral nerves towards the cortex and produced an intensive exchange of sensori-motor afferent and efferent inputs and outputs. Four weeks of training led to a new functional recruitment of sensorimotor areas devoted to hand control.

"Taken together, the results of this study confirm that neural interfaces are optimal candidates for hand prosthesis control," says Dr. Porcaro. "They establish communication channels needed for natural control of the prosthesis. Furthermore, neural interfaces recreate the connection with the environment that promotes restorative neuroplasticity. Bi-hemispheric networks regain the physiological communication necessary for motor control."

Apple responds to SMS vulnerability concerns, suggests using iMessage

Apple responds to SMS vulnerability concerns, suggests using iMessageApple has responded to questions raised by pod2g earlier this week over an SMS vulnerability he discovered in the latest iOS 6 beta 4. The SMS vulnerability could allow someone to abuse the protocol for SMS in order to spoof or send fake text messages. The exploit has been an issue since the incarnation of iOS and is still present in iOS 6 beta 4. Apple issued a statement to The Loop which explains that the problem was not an iPhone specific problem as first thought but down to the SMS protocol used by all phones.

?Apple takes security very seriously. When using iMessage instead of SMS, addresses are verified which protects against these kinds of spoofing attacks,? an Apple representative told The Loop. ?One of the limitations of SMS is that it allows messages to be sent with spoofed addresses to any phone, so we urge customers to be extremely careful if they?re directed to an unknown website or address over SMS.?

So there you have it, the problem is not with just the iPhone but it is an SMS problem for every phone. The idea of using iMessage for all messaging on your iPhone sounds like a great one. Unfortunately, from my experience it is not exactly reliable; some messages never reach their destination or the iMessage servers are down when I want to use it. The other problem of course is that if the recipient doesn?t have an iPhone then SMS is your only option.

what's the big deal about budget season? | Close to Home

Those of you who know me in person may have detected a bit of increased tension over the last few weeks. I find I am not as fun to be around as usual.I am probably scowling more than I am smiling. I have frequent headaches.

Because its ?budget season?

Just as in any other business, the Children?s Hospital has to spend its money carefully, so that we are still around the next day to provide service for more children who need us. As opposed to other businesses, we cannot simply charge a price that reflects the value of our service. We cannot, nor do we want to, refuse care to those with limited means. But we cannot be complacent with losing money day after day, month after month, and year after year.

?

Every year since my arrival in 2007, we have spent the summer months preparing our budget for the next fiscal year?which starts on October 1. To meet my personal responsibilities as a member of the Carilion leadership community, not only do I have to work with my administrative and finance partners to develop a sound budget, but together we have to review all the services we provide, assess the costs and benefits of these services and determine how much money we can afford to lose on each one. In just a few days, we will be ?presenting? our operational and financial plan to the overall Carilion leadership for approval.

I have to face the fact that I sometimes have conflicting and competing priorities.

My first priority is the provision of highest possible quality care to the infants, children and adolescents in the Roanoke Valley as well as throughout southwest Virginia. Providing this care, however, engenders significant cost. As responsible members of the healthcare community we have to be able to decrease the cost of care, while upholding and improving quality, access to pediatric subspecialists in addition to generalists, and state-of-the art hospital care in our inpatient and critical care units.

How will we achieve these simultaneous and seemingly incompatible goals?

By constantly evaluating what we do, and asking the key questions necessary to make our systems of care better. We can no longer afford to say: ?This is how we have always done it.? We cannot sit complacently watching as costs continue to rise.

This means we sometimes have to say ?No? to even some of the best and most patient- and family- friendly ideas and services. This means some of the physicians and nurses might get angry with me. Unfortunately, it comes with the territory. The fun parts of leadership are countered by the difficult decisions, the heart-wrenching times when we might be denying a child the ability to get their necessary specialized care as? ?Close To Home? as we would like.

If you have been reading this blog for any time whatsoever, you might be asking how someone so committed to humanism, and so interested in child advocacy would put herself into a situation like this. I look at it a bit like I looked at my decision to practice pediatric critical care for so many years. Just as I was able to explain to friends and family members, that IF I didn?t care for the critically ill and injured, they would still be there, they would still be sick and sometimes they would die. Maybe, by applying my skills carefully and humanely, just maybe a child might survive who was otherwise going to die. Or maybe the family of a dying child would be cared for just a little bit better than if I wasn?t there.

I look at leadership in the same way.

The same decisions would have to be made, even if I was not involved in making them. Who knows what the outcome would be? I hope I add something positive to the discussion. I hope I advocate appropriately for what our child patients and their healthcare providers? need. I hope I can minimize some of the distress the providers feel when they are asked to do more with less.

So, while I may feel more stress than usual during this time of the year, I still love what I do. I still love ALL of what I do. Patient care, teaching, research and administration.

Have you felt the ?stress of budget season?? How do you make your toughest decisions?
