Even though longboard style of skateboarding has been well-liked for quite some time Loaded longboards are an appealing possibility for riders who have moved beyond the newbie level , and have began to learn about features that are most beneficial for their kind of longboard riding.
Kinds of Loaded Longboards to Take into Consideration
The firm is based in California and currently has six skateboard models to pick from. Some of the differences between the models include the total length, and the size of the wheelbase. The boards are also designed with eye-catching patterns so riders could glide in style .
All of the boards are made for high-performance, however some have got functions that cater to particular kinds of riding or surroundings.
For instance, some skateboarders choose to expend much of their own time at nearby skate areas. These areas feature large pavement areas and mountains that are perfect for attaining impressive speeds. Another benefit of skate parks is they allow individuals to share suggestions and have support from some other riders. The skateboarding community is generally very close-knit and supportive of every other's efforts. People who wish to ride Loaded longboards at a skate park might like the Fattail design. It's perfect for paved areas and parking garages, and also has a big tail to promote quick turning ability.
Alternatively Loaded longboards that concentrate on the freestyle discipline have shorter wheelbases for extra responsiveness whilst doing tricks and staying safe through tight turns.
Purchasing Loaded Longboards
Understandably, the price of longboards is of great issue to a lot of riders, especially when their earnings is limited. As with other kinds of investments, it's well advantageous to consider the personal importance of the purchase, and also contemplate how the enjoyment of the skateboard continues with time, specially as a rider's skills improve.
Also, remember that the ultimate cost will depend on which Loaded model riders select, and whether or not they want to create their customizations to the board after buying it.
To aid in the purchasing procedure of your own Loaded longboards, start by making a list of certain features that are most crucial. Then, do research to view which model of longboard gives all or most of those features. Whether you are looking for a commuter board, or a compact deck, Loaded has got a design to suit your needs.

YUMA, Ariz. (AP) ? Suspected smugglers who tried to use ramps to drive an SUV over a 14-foot-tall border fence had to abandon their plan when the Jeep became stuck on top of the barrier, authorities said Wednesday.
Agents patrolling the U.S.-Mexico border near the Imperial Sand Dunes in California's southeast corner spotted the Jeep Cherokee teetering atop the fence early Tuesday, Border Patrol spokesman Spencer Tippets said. The vehicle was perched about five miles west of the Colorado River and the Arizona state line.
Two smugglers on the Mexican side of the border were trying to free the Jeep when the agents approached, Tippets said. They ran further into Mexico and escaped.
The Jeep was empty, but agents said it was probably filled with contraband like bales of marijuana before it got high-centered atop the fence.
The smugglers had built ramps to drive up and over the fence, something that has been tried at least once before. In April 2011, agents found a truck that had ramps built onto it and had driven up to the border fence. A pickup had driven up and over the fence, but it was spotted and its occupants were captured, Tippets said.
The agency's Yuma sector has seen a 95 percent reduction in human smuggling in recent years, freeing up agents to focus on drug smugglers.
"Because of how successful we are we don't have all the clutter like we had in years past," Tippets said. "Now that all the clutter is gone, we're able to focus on things that are bigger threats."
The terrain in western Arizona and eastern California has little vegetation and is much less rugged than the land in southeastern Arizona, so smugglers have a harder time making it into the U.S. without being spotted.
Dear Ben Affleck,
With "Gone Baby Gone", "The Town" and now "Argo" under your belt, I don't think anybody (mainly myself) can deny your prowess as a top tier filmmaker any longer. So, before I began with my actual review, I wanted to preface it with this short statement, which you should take as a letter of apology for every negative thing I've ever said about your filmmaking through the years, as well as a letter of forgiveness for "Gigli", "Jersey Girl" and "Daredevil"...well, maybe not "Daredevil".
Synopsis: Directed by Ben Affleck, "Argo" is a film which dramatizes the declassified true story (set in the late 70's/early 80's) of CIA agent Tony Mendez (played by Affleck) who spearheaded the insane plan to secretly extract six fugitive American diplomatic personnel out of a revolutionary Iran, by posing as a fake Canadian film crew scouting a fake Canadian film (a "Star Wars" rip-off by the name of "Argo"). And while this synopsis sadly may not sound like it would translate into a compelling Saturday night date movie (especially to those who didn't live through the actual event, or to those who think purchasing tickets to see the newest Silent Hill film is a good way to spend their money) what puts it over-the-top/makes this premise sing, is the undeniably engaging combination of Chris Terrio's screenplay, which perfectly balances comedic scenes with ones of gritty wartime events (maybe the toughest thing to do in scriptwriting) and Affleck's spot on portrayal of late 70's Iran and America (at times using actual footage) showcasing a devastatingly provocative parallel to that point in history and the post 9/11 atmosphere in the United States, as well as his startlingly brilliant ability to take a rather simplistic resolution (final 45 minutes) and mold it into one of the most suspenseful climaxes in recent years.
The only real flaw I could see in "Argo" is that with such a wealth of great actors, and the movie primarily surrounding Affleck's character, for long stretches of the film actors such as Bryan Cranston (who in my opinion, has overtaken Stanley Tucci as the best character actor working today) John Goodman and Alan Arkin (who are all excellent in their roles) aren't really given much to do. My only wish (if this movie weren't already 2 hours long) would've been to see more scenes showcasing this strong supporting cast.
Final Thought: Aside from the fact that "Argo" may garner him an Oscar nomination, what director Affleck has done with this film, is shown his incredible Spielberg-esque ability to take a historical event, that may have come off as dry or utterly uneventful in other hands, and make it so every second of what's on screen, no matter how seemingly mundane or complex, is impressively compelling. If you haven't figured it out by now, what I'm saying is that everyone should go see "Agro" (as it is one of the best movies of the year so far) even if movies described as "historical dramas" immediately make you reply with the phrase: "so what else is playing?"

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- A second woman who worked with businessman Jonathan Dunning has filed a sexual harassment complaint against him, alleging, among other? things, inappropriate text messages.
The complaint was filed Sept. 11 with the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission.
The woman's lawyer, Rick Digiorgio, provided confirmation of the complaint - which is not made available to the public by the EEOC - on the condition that his client's name be withheld.
The alleged harassment occurred at a restaurant in Hoover, where Dunning is majority owner. In her complaint, the woman said the harassment began in the summer of 2011 after she sold a majority stake in the restaurant to Dunning. She continued to work there until she resigned several months ago.
"From the time that I sold the business, I was sexually harassed by the new owner," she wrote in the EEOC complaint.
"The owner [Dunning] would ask me to meet him at different restaurants," she wrote. "Occasionally, he would ask me to meet him at his home. The owner would tell me that he would like to offer me employment at his other businesses; however the conversation would usually involve what gifts he could offer me if I complied with his requests."
The complainant also said Dunning sent her "demanding text messages in the middle of the night" and would "become verbally abusive if I did not respond."
Dunning's attorney, Andrew Allen, said Dunning denies the allegations and "will vigorously defend against them."
"The party alleging these unfounded claims is a co-owner of a restaurant in which she and Mr. Dunning are both investors," Allen said in an e-mailed statement. "A dispute arose among shareholders of the business, and one investor opportunistically latched upon false allegations in a completely unrelated matter in order to leverage greater bargaining power to resolve the dispute."
This complaint comes on the heels of one filed this summer by Sharon Waltz alleging harassment by Dunning while the two worked together at the nonprofit Birmingham Health Care and Dunning's private for-profit Synergy Medical Solutions.
Dunning and Waltz are also embroiled in a custody battle over two children Dunning fathered with Waltz.
Dunning was CEO of Birmingham Health Care for about a decade ending in 2008. Earlier this year, the Birmingham News reported that while serving dual roles as CEO at Birmingham Health Care and at a health clinic in Tuskegee, Dunning formed private for-profit companies which landed at least $2 million in contracts with both health clinics. The News also reported that Birmingham Health Care sold a building it owned to a private for-profit company owned by Dunning, while Dunning was still CEO at the nonprofit.
Copyright regulators rejected on Thursday proposals to make it lawful for people to copy DVDs for personal use or to jailbreak videogame consoles to run custom software.
The ruling hands yet another loss to digital rights groups who are waging an ongoing campaign to chip away at the scope of a law that limits citizens? rights by treating copyright owners? encryption techniques as sacrosanct.
Every three years, the U.S. Copyright Office entertains requests to create temporary loopholes in the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, which makes it unlawful to circumvent encryption technologies in items that you buy.
It?s all part of a long-running showdown between the big copyright holders who view the world as divided into creators and consumers, and a coalition of librarians, digital rights groups, disability activists and hackers who seek to preserve a world where people can repurpose, upgrade and build upon the devices and media they legally buy ? just as hackers, painters and culture jammers had done for decades before the DMCA was adopted in 1998.
Librarian of Congress James Billington and Register of Copyrights Maria Pallante rejected the two most-sought-after items on the docket, game-console modding and DVD cracking for personal use and ?space shifting.? Congress plays no role in the outcome.
The regulators said that the controls were necessary to prevent software piracy and differentiated gaming consoles from smart phones, which legally can be jailbroken:
The record demonstrated that access controls on gaming consoles protect not only the console firmware, but the video games and applications that run on the console as well. The evidence showed that video games are far more difficult and complex to produce than smartphone applications, requiring teams of developers and potential investments in the millions of dollars. While the access controls at issue might serve to further manufacturers? business interests, they also protect highly valuable expressive works ? many of which are created and owned by the manufacturers ? in addition to console?firmware itself.
On the plus side, the regulators re-authorized jailbreaking of mobile phones.
On the downside, they denied it for tablets, saying an ?ebook reading device might be considered a tablet, as might a handheld video game device.? We don?t suspect Apple or Google would sue anybody for jailbreaking their tablets, as they never sued anybody for jailbreaking mobile phones even before regulators first approved jailbreaking in 2010.
That said, when the only difference between a Galaxy Note and a Android tablet is an inch and a radio that can handle voice and data channels, it?s a pretty odd line to draw.
Digital-rights group Public Knowledge blasted the decision forbidding DVD cracking to enable consumers the ability to make copies of their DVDs so they can be watched on various devices in different platforms.
The group had asked regulators to grant consumers the lawful right to make copies of DVDs for personal use, a request the Motion Picture Association of America strongly opposed. While plenty of programs exist to decrypt the so-called content-scramble-system encryption on DVDs, the decision against making it lawful means the mainstream public must live under Hollywood?s rules.
?Today?s decision flies in the face of reality. The register and the librarian were unable to recognize that personal space shifting is protected by fair use. This has implications beyond making personal copies of motion pictures on DVD,? said Michael Weinberg, a Public Knowledge vice president. ?Under this view of the law every personal non-commercial space shift is a violation of copyright law. That means, according to the Copyright Office, every person who has ever ripped a CD to put on her iPod is a copyright infringer.?

GEORGE TOWN (Oct 18, 2012) : Calls for a 200-year-old Jawi Peranakan house to be turned into a museum may become a reality. Local Government Committee chairman Chow Kon Yeow said the Penang Island Municipal Council (MPPP) had been asked to review its the decision to sell the land. ?I have asked the council to review the decision to sell the land and the implications involved if the house is sold,? he said yesterday. The decision came about after Chow chaired a meeting between representatives of MPPP, Penang Jawi Peranakan Heritage Society and other heritage NGOs held at Komtar on Tuesday. ?The society and other heritage activists urged us to preserve the building, not only for its artistic architecture, but also to use it as a museum whereby the Jawi Peranakan contribution to the state's development will be acknowledged,? he said, adding that he hoped the matter would be resolved soon. Furthermore, Chow said that since the house is regarded as a Class II heritage building within the World Unesco Heritage Site, it has to be refurbished. Meanwhile, society president Datuk Dr Wazir Jahan Karim said MPPP should reverse its decision to sell off the land. ?We want it for the Penangites ? the younger generation, students, historians, architects, anthropologists and sociologists,? she said, adding that the house is part and parcel of Jawi Peranakan development in the state. Wazir said the building can be transferred to George Town World Heritage Incorporated and converted into a museum for Jawi Peranakan in the state. ?We hope for the best and we want to be optimistic about this,? she added. theSun had highlighted Wazir's call for the building to be turned into a museum as it used to be the home of a prominent Jawi Peranakan family. Dubbed the 'Malay Millionaire's Row' in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, Hutton Lane used to be where lived traders and entrepreneurs who made their fortune by constructing mansions.

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) - Two months of crippling labor turmoil are likely to force South Africa to look again at its economic growth forecasts, the central bank's deputy governor said on Sunday.
Wildcat strikes that started in the platinum mines have left more than 50 dead and spilled to other industries, undermining investor confidence in Africa's biggest economy and tarnishing President Jacob Zuma's government.
Violent clashes between police and protesters continued over the weekend and more than 70 miners were arrested.
"Growth forecasts will most likely need to be revisited," Reserve Bank Deputy Governor Daniel Mminele said in a speech to a JP Morgan investor seminar in Tokyo that was posted on the central bank's website.
The Reserve Bank's latest economic growth forecasts were for an average 2.6 percent this year and 3.4 percent next - still far short of the rate South Africa reckons it needs to cut unemployment accounting for a quarter of the labor force.
It was not immediately clear whether those growth forecasts, given in September, were the ones Mminele was referring to.
In another knock for South Africa, Standard and Poor's cut its credit rating on Friday, citing the strikes and social tensions. Moody's downgraded South Africa in September.
Reacting to the downgrades, Mminele said they were disappointing, but some of the criticism was valid.
IMPACT OF WAGES
Financial analysts are not only worried by the turmoil, but also by the possible impact on inflation of wage rises that some of the strikers have won - up to 22 percent in the case of Lonmin Plc miners.
The central bank had yet to see evidence that hefty wage increases were becoming the norm, but would have to keep a close eye on them in case they had a spillover in pushing up prices or expectations of price rises, Mminele said.
Clashes continued over the weekend, nearly two months after police shot dead 34 strikers at Lonmin's Marikana mine on August16, the bloodiest security incident in South Africa's post-apartheid history.
Police broke up a sit-in by nearly 600 miners from a Gold Fields mine demanding the release of colleagues at a police station, about 45 km (30 miles) west of Johannesburg. Seventy-two miners were arrested.
Near Rustenburg, in the "platinum belt" about 120 km (75 miles) northwest of Johannesburg, police fired tear gas and rubber bullets after a march on an Anglo American Platinum mine turned violent. Four protesters were arrested.
President Zuma's government has been criticized for allowing the strikes to spread, as well as failure to address yawning class divisions and grinding poverty that still characterize South Africa 18 years after the end of apartheid.
Zuma faces a significant threat from members of the ruling African national Congress who are lobbying for his removal as head of the party at a scheduled leadership election in December. He held a "social dialogue meeting" on Friday with union and business leaders and some cabinet ministers to discuss the economy.
But the meeting appeared to deliver little new: Zuma's office released a statement pushing the need for improved industrial relations and condemning the violent strikes.
Separately, Mines Minister Susan Shabangu was quoted by local media on the need for the ANC to drop talk of nationalization. Some members of the party have lobbied for increased state intervention in the industry.

The fawn dog won a 550 yards event on September 21st, when taking a narrow victory over The Other Peach. After stealing the show in a great fashion, he stepped down to 525 yards, and continued the awesome work.
The son of Forest Jack was runner-up on his previous two outings. It would not be wrong to say that he is facing slightly weaker opposition than last time. So, one can easily expect him to add the winning touch.
Out of others, no hound is in such good rhythm. Laser Transfer has the draw in favour, but his record in this class is not impressive at all. He is stepping up in class, and will be under a lot of pressure.
Droopys Crumlin is coming to this grade after facing a couple of terrible defeats at the A1 level. The task is very difficult for the black dog. Sweetness? last act at the A2 level was decent. But a recent defeat would have dented her confidence to some
extent.
Barneys Flying is in poor form, and although he is coming one step down on the grading ladder, it is hard to trust him. Almost Icy finished at bottom of the table last twice, and seems to have no chance whatsoever. It will be very hard for the black bitch
to thrive straight after two awful losses.

BEIJING (AP) ? China's newly named Nobel laureate for literature expressed hope Friday that an imprisoned Chinese winner of the Nobel Peace Prize will be freed, putting a dent in the ruling Communist Party's attempts to use his historic win to burnish its credentials.
Mo Yan, the first Chinese writer to win the literature Nobel, made the comments about dissident Liu Xiaobo, who was awarded the Peace Prize while serving a prison sentence for opposing single-party rule, in response to a question at a news conference.
"I now hope that he can regain his freedom very soon," Mo Yan said. "If (Liu) can be freed in good health sooner, then he can study his politics and his social system."
He didn't elaborate, but Mo ? who is a Communist Party member ? appeared to be arguing that releasing Liu might allow the dissident to be convinced to embrace the party line.
His statement on Liu in his hometown of Gaomi in Shandong province came amid criticism by human rights activists that Mo compromises his artistic and intellectual independence by being a party member and vice president of the official writers association.
The call for Liu's release came just after the party's propaganda chief, Li Changchun, issued congratulations to Mo, saying the award "reflects the prosperity and progress of Chinese literature, as well as the increasing influence of China."
News of Mo's historic win was plastered across newspaper front pages Friday.
The nationalist tabloid Global Times praised Mo's award as a sign of Western acceptance of mainstream Chinese culture. As one of China's most popular writers, Mo represents a rising China in both the economic and cultural spheres, the paper said in an editorial.
"The Chinese mainstream cannot be refused by the West for long," it said.
The response was a stark contrast to two years ago when the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Liu, who was sentenced to 11 years in prison in 2009 for co-authoring a bold call for ending single-party rule and enacting democratic reforms titled Charter 08.
The Chinese government rejected that honor, calling it a desecration of the Nobel tradition, and chilled relations with Norway, where the prize is awarded but whose government has no say in whom it goes to. China's rulers forbid opposition parties and maintain strict control over all media.
On Friday, Paris-based advocacy group Reporters Without Borders released a video showing the silhouette of a lone woman identified as Liu's wife, Liu Xia, smoking by a window at night in the apartment where she has been under virtual house arrest since October 2010.
The group did not say how it obtained the footage but said it was difficult and indicative of Liu Xia's imposed isolation and the near impossibility of approaching her.
"Smoking a cigarette at her window is one of the few freedoms left to her," said the group, which demanded the release of both Liu Xia and her husband.
Chinese officials have refused to discuss Liu Xia's condition, despite the lack of a legal justification for her confinement.
Prior to Mo's comments, famed artist and activist Ai Weiwei told The Associated Press that Mo was cooperating with a system that was "constantly poisoning" its people.
"They mock the ones who dare to raise their voice and opinion, and ignore the sacrifice some have made to gain that right. This is shameful. It is a shame for the Swedish Nobel Prize committee," Ai said.
At his impromptu news conference, Mo said he'd known Liu, but the two hadn't been in contact for some time. Mo, 57, and Liu, 56, attended the same school, Beijing Normal University's Luxun Literature Institute, 10 years apart.
"I didn't have any more exchanges with (Liu) after he left literature and embraced politics," Mo said. "I don't know really much about many of his activities."
On Friday, searches for "Liu Xiaobo" or "Nobel Peace Prize" were being censored on Chinese search engines and social media sites, but looking up "Mo Yan" or "Nobel literature prize" was allowed.
Mo's win also won sweeping coverage in democratic Taiwan, which China claims to be part of its own territory.
The island's culture minister, Lung Ying-tai, on Friday called Mo "a man of humor" who has used that wit to avoid possible persecution.
Lung, a noted essayist, said the prize may help Chinese "open up their minds and hearts" and engage the world through literature.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 11, 2012) ? New research is revealing surprising connections between animal microbiomes -- the communities of microbes that live inside animals' bodies -- and animal behavior, according to a paper by University of Georgia ecologist Vanessa O. Ezenwa and her colleagues. The article, just published in the Perspectives section of the journal Science, reviews recent developments in this emerging research area and offers questions for future investigation.
The paper grew out of a National Science Foundation-sponsored workshop on new ways to approach the study of animal behavior. Ezenwa, an associate professor in the UGA Odum School of Ecology and College of Veterinary Medicine department of infectious diseases, and her coauthors were interested in the relationship between animal behavior and beneficial microbes.
Most research on the interactions between microbes and their animal hosts has focused on pathogens, Ezenwa said. Less is known about beneficial microbes or animal microbiomes, but several recent studies have begun to explore these connections.
"We know that animal behavior plays a critical role in establishing microbiomes," she said. "Once they're established, the microbiomes then influence animal behavior in lots of ways that have far-reaching consequences. That's what we were trying to highlight in this article."
Bumble bees, for example, obtain the microbes they need through social contact with nest mates, including consuming their nest mates' feces-a not uncommon method for animals to acquire microbes. Green iguanas establish their intestinal microbiomes by feeding first on soil and later on the feces of adult iguanas.
"There are a lot of behaviors that animals might have that allow them to get the different microbes they need at different points of their lives," Ezenwa said.
Microbes, in their turn, influence a wide range of animal behaviors, including feeding, mating and predator-prey interactions.
One recent study found that fruit flies prefer to mate with others that have microbiomes most similar to their own. Another found that African malaria mosquitoes were less attracted to humans who had a greater diversity of microbes on their skin, possibly because certain microbes produce chemicals that repel these mosquitoes.
Other studies have focused on understanding the mechanisms by which microbes influence behavior.
"Recent experiments have been able to assess the molecules that are involved in communication between microbes in the gut and the brain of mice, showing that microbes are associated with shifts in things like depression and anxiety in these mice," she said. "There are huge implications in the role these microbes play in regulating neural function."
Ezenwa's own work involves investigating how social behavior and interactions between organisms might increase their likelihood of acquiring parasites and pathogens. She is starting a new project examining animal behavior and microbiomes in relation to infectious disease.
"As in the example of the bumble bees, behavior might control the microbes an animal acquires, and those microbes might then influence the animal's vulnerability to pathogens," she said.
The authors conclude that it will take a combination of molecular and experimental approaches to answer questions about the complex interactions between microbiomes and animal behaviors.
"This is a new, emerging topic that's worthy of much more investigation," Ezenwa said.
The article's coauthors are Nicole M. Gerardo of Emory University; David W. Inouye of the Rocky Mountain Biological Laboratory and the University of Maryland; Monica Medina of the University of California, Merced; and Joao B. Xavier of the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

In a recent supplement published by Field Technologies magazine, called 5 Reasons to Go Rugged, a selection of senior industry leaders made the case for choosing rugged mobile devices over equivalent commercial-grade products. Going beyond the traditional total cost of ownership (TCO) measurement, their focus shifts to the technical, operational and business ?considerations when selecting a mobile computing solution.
Reliability
The article states,?[A] critical aspect of any successful TCO [Total Cost of Ownership] analysis needs to include the business elements of TCO. These include length of deployment/ replacement cycles, failure rates and causes, and opportunity cost of lost productivity due to device failure, to name a few. Through such a full analysis, organizations can determine the solution which will best serve their company.? The article also points out that, ?[e]ach additional percentage point increase in failure translates into a 5% increase in TCO.?
Rather than just looking at the cost of purchase, install and support of a mobile computing solution, Field Technologies is highlighting that the long-term reliability of the computer is absolutely crucial when calculating the overall cost.
This is further explained: ?When consumer-grade devices are deployed in scenarios where rugged devices are really needed, replacement costs for devices that are unreliable or fail in the field will directly impact overall workforce efficiencies and can easily offset any initial savings of a consumer-grade solution. Further, the transitional disruption of deploying a new field mobility investment must also be considered; if the proposed solution fails to live up to expectations, there can be a significant cost in manpower and expense to retrain, restructure, and reconfigure existing systems if an alternative solution must be deployed.?
It?s Not Just Device Failure
Reducing the failure rate of devices in the field is undoubtedly an extremely important aspect in the purchasing process of a mobile computing solution; however it is not the only problem that may be faced if the incorrect products are selected. The article states, ?[p]ortability, connectivity, extended battery life, and a viewable outdoor display are also key to selecting the right rugged tablet to ensure productivity.?
Devices that are not well suited to the day-to-day functions of your field workers in areas such as transportation and mounting, back office connectivity, battery life, and viewing capabilities in different lighting conditions will dramatically affect worker productivity.
The article continues, ?[b]ecause field workers are often outdoors, an additional value to rugged computers is a daylight viewable screen. The glossy screen associated with consumer-grade devices makes using laptops or tablets outdoors nearly impossible. More advanced LCD technology, along with antiglare and antireflective features, contributes to the level of outdoor view-ability users will experience on rugged devices. Also, with a field crew?s constant remote whereabouts, a battery that can last the full shift is important to keep workers productive throughout the workday.?
No Compromise
Another key component in the selection process of a mobile computing solution is whether or not the chosen devices will have the ability to perform very specialized tasks and utilize specific peripherals that are vital to the effective operation of the system.
Field Technologies also emphasizes the importance of extended functionality with specialized rugged computers explaining, ?[t]oday?s rugged devices come equipped with an array of additional features to increase productivity including bar code scanners, magnetic stripe readers, digital cameras, high-speed access to secure wireless LANs, and integrated RFID technology. Not only are these features integrated into the device, but they?re designed to the same rugged specifications as the tablet itself.?
Continuing to say, ?[b]usinesses that choose non-rugged devices make additional compromises due to the products not having all the features required, inhibiting their ability to achieve the full impact across the entire enterprise. Companies with a no-compromise mind-set evaluate a broad set of attributes when selecting a rugged versus non-rugged tablet. They require a rugged mobile tablet platform rather than a single point solution. By selecting the tools for improving productivity anywhere, they gain significantly more long term value and leverage across the business and also are able to truly deliver sustained innovation to their businesses.?
How Rugged is Rugged?
Today there are many different definitions of what a rugged device actually is. Some might consider that a consumer-grade tablet encased in a durable shell could be called ?rugged?, but it is important to ensure the device?s specifications when making an investment in rugged mobile computers.
The supplement explains that for a mobile device to accurately be described as rugged, ?[i]t means specially engineered parts that protect your data from on-the-job accidents. It means peace of mind when you drop a computer or leave it out in the elements. It means safeguards for your data that just cannot be expected of a consumer device. What it means, therefore, is protection for your investment ? a truly rugged tablet will not break under tough industry circumstances, thereby ensuring increased productivity and more efficient operations over a long life cycle.?
The article goes on to explain that specific testing standards can help to ensure that the purchased devices will be able to handle the rigours of all potential environments. ?There are two tests that are mainstays of rugged device standards: the ?Military Standard for Environmental Testing and Engineering Guidelines? (MIL-STD-810G) and the ?IEC (IP) Ingress Protection Test?. MIL-STD-810G is used for determining the effects of natural and man-made environments on products intended for use in harsh mobile environments.? IP ratings indicate the level of protection a computer offers against the ingress of particles and liquids. For example, an IP rating of IP67 means hardware is sealed against dust and can be immersed in liquid.?
The supplement closes with a final point to consider when selecting a rugged mobile computing solution, ?if you want to make the most of your investment in your new hardware, don?t just purchase a unit without checking the testing it has undergone, the durability of its parts, and its ability to protect your data. Otherwise, the rigors of your industry can quickly wreck your new computer ? and your ROI along with it.?

Motorola isn't going to escape as cleanly as it would like from Microsoft's patent lawsuit campaign. Microsoft has sued Motorola once more in Germany, only this time it's waging a more direct fight against Motorola's owner Google. The lawsuit claims that Motorola devices violate a patent for taking map information from one set and overlaying it with data from another -- a technique that describes Google Maps, not to mention virtually every internet-connected mapping system we know. Details aren't yet available for the devices allegedly at risk, but the accusation would make it harder for Google, Motorola or both to simply code around the problem if they lose. No doubt Microsoft is counting on just that obstacle to have the RAZR maker fall in line with everyone else and take a license just for using Android.
