State Republican parties mired in dysfunction

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) ? Plagued by infighting and deep ideological divisions, state Republican parties from Alaska to Maine are mired in dysfunction. Several state Republican leaders have been forced out or resigned in recent months, and many state GOP parties face financial problems and skeptical national leaders.

Democrats are not immune to such problems, but the conflicts on the Republican side highlight the tug of war over the GOP's future as national leaders work to improve the party's brand. At the same time, the Republican dysfunction raises questions about the GOP's ability to coordinate political activities in key battleground states ahead of next year's midterm congressional elections.

"There's been a lot of division and disharmony in the Republican Party," newly elected Maine GOP Chairman Rick Bennett told The Associated Press.

National GOP officials say help is on the way.

The Republican National Committee announced Wednesday that it has hired a dozen state directors to work closely with state parties, the first major step in GOP Chairman Reince Priebus' plan to erase the long-standing political advantage Democrats enjoy in some states.

Maine Republicans elected Bennett last weekend following the sudden resignations of the state GOP's top two officials. The former state Senate president inherited significant operating deficits and continued divisions between the party's moderate and libertarian factions, just as high-profile campaigns for governor and the U.S. Senate are beginning to ramp up.

Maine Republicans are not alone.

The Illinois state GOP chairman resigned in May after party moderates clashed with social conservatives over the chairman's support for gay marriage. The Alaska Republican Party is on its third chairman this year; party activists ousted the first two over fundraising concerns. The Minnesota GOP also has cycled through chairmen and long has been troubled by financial issues.

And state parties in Nevada and Iowa are largely controlled by members of the GOP's libertarian wing, a group that's known for criticizing the very same Republican establishment leaders they're supposed to be cooperating with heading into the 2014 campaign season. Problems have been lingering for much of the past year.

"The job of a state party is to attack Democrats and build an infrastructure that helps elect more Republicans to state and federal office," said Ryan Williams, an aide to Mitt Romney's 2012 GOP presidential campaign. Williams, who worked closely with state parties during last year's campaign, said some "were so dysfunctional, mismanaged and crippled by infighting that national Republicans had to work around them and set up shadow organizations to build our ground game."

Republicans note that Democratic state parties also have faced dysfunction in recent months.

Alabama's state party has struggled to pay its bills and faced eviction earlier in the year, while Georgia's Democratic Party chairman resigned last month after being reprimanded by the state Supreme Court.

For Republicans in Maine and elsewhere, there are signs of improvement as more experienced political leaders take over for enthusiastic newcomers who have, in some cases, struggled with fundraising and logistics required to coordinate statewide political organizations.

The Republican National Committee is working to strengthen the state operations as well.

Priebus on Wednesday announced the addition of state-level directors in 12 states: California, Florida, Louisiana, Michigan, Montana, New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

Their tasks include working with state parties to coordinate campaign efforts, planning GOP events across their states and collecting voter data, according to the RNC, which has more than 125 staffers already spread across the states, with many more hires expected by the end of the year.

"We're building the most expansive field program the GOP has ever seen, and we're doing it earlier than ever before," Priebus said. "Our state directors will play key roles in building a permanent field operation to be successful in elections this year, in 2014, in 2016 and beyond."

The first wave of hires is focused where the party faces high-profile elections in 2013 and 2014. Both Virginia and New Jersey feature gubernatorial contests this fall. And with the U.S. Senate majority at stake, Republicans are eyeing 2014 pickup opportunities in Montana, West Virginia and Louisiana.

In some states where new directors have yet to be hired, acute problems remain.

In Iowa, for example, the state GOP apparatus has become a reflection of the party's bitterly divided factions. Led by followers of libertarian-minded Ron Paul, the state party organization has quarreled with Republican Gov. Terry Branstad and disputed his strategy for state government and party affairs.

The stakes are high in Iowa, where the GOP has an opportunity to win the U.S. Senate seat long occupied by Democrat Tom Harkin, who is not seeking re-election.

In Minnesota, Republicans have been salivating to unseat two Democratic incumbents, Gov. Mark Dayton and Sen. Al Franken. But Republicans there are at their weakest political point in more than 30 years. They hold no major offices, are in the minority of both legislative chambers and haven't won a statewide election since Tim Pawlenty secured a second term as governor in 2006. Their candidate for Senate in 2012 mustered a bare 30 percent of the vote.

The Minnesota GOP has endured leadership shake-ups. Strife between old-guard members and Paul adherents lingers. And the GOP is struggling to get out from under a mountain of debt.

In Maine, Republicans are working to retain the governor's seat, although Gov. Paul LePage is expected to face a challenging re-election in a state that overwhelmingly supported President Barack Obama. Republican Sen. Susan Collins also faces re-election next year, although a serious challenger has yet to emerge.

"The Republican Party in Maine ? and certainly in other states ? is going through a period of redefinition," Bennett said. "I think people are ready to move beyond that and to find common ground within the party."

Sony ?Honami? smartphone?s 20MP camera rumored to have smaller sensor than previously expected

sony_honami_leak_2

?

We already know that Sony?s next beast of a device is gonna have some awesome specs, but we are starting to get some critical deets for one of the most important parts of the smartphone? it?s awesome camera. While we know the i1 will probably have a 20MP camera, it will likely have a smaller-than-expected sensor compared to say? the Nokia Lumia 1020 smartphone. Rumor has it that the sensor will ?only? come in at?1/2.3? in total size, compared to 2/3? that was previously expected. Despite the smaller sensor, the camera will still be topnotch as the 20MP cam will have a?f/2.0 with 5mm focal length and utilize the BIONZ processing engine, which effectively allows the camera to take photos with a resolution of up to?5248 x 3936 pixels.

Of course this is all speculation, but it finally appears that we?re starting to get a better idea of what to expect when Sony unleashes its next flagship in only a matter of months from now.

Suit water leak halts ISS spacewalk

"It is not sweat": Footage from Nasa shows the incident unfold

Nasa has aborted a spacewalk at the International Space Station (ISS) because of a dangerous water leak in an astronaut's helmet.

The leak was so bad that Luca Parmitano, Italy's first spacewalker, could not hear or speak as the spacewalk came to an abrupt end.

He asked his spacewalking partner, Christopher Cassidy, for help getting back inside the ISS.

"He looks miserable. But okay," Mr Cassidy told ground controllers.

The source of the leak wasn't immediately known but one possible source being considered was the helmet drink bag that astronauts sip from during spacewalks.

However, Mr Parmitano reported that it didn't taste like drinking water.

Before crewmates inside yanked off his helmet, Mr Parmitano said: "It's a lot of water."

Nasa rarely cuts a spacewalk short, but the Italian could have choked on the floating water droplets in the helmet.

The trouble cropped up barely an hour into what was to be a six-hour spacewalk to perform cabling work and other routine maintenance.

It was the astronauts' second spacewalk in eight days.

Mr Parmitano startled everyone when he announced that he felt a lot of water on the back of his head.

He had first thought the liquid was sweat brought on by the exertion of the job. But he was repeatedly assured it could not be.

Early estimates suggested about half a litre of water had leaked out.

The water eventually got into Mr Parmitano's eyes. When that happened, ground controllers ordered the two men back inside the station.

He became the first Italian to conduct a spacewalk last Tuesday, more than a month after arriving space station.

Mr Cassidy, 43, a former Navy Seal, is a veteran spacewalker midway through a six-month rotation on the ISS.

We Don't Need No Stinkin' Robots: How the Pentagon Could Destroy All Monsters

First, don't go toe-to-toe with them on the ground. Infantry should be reserved for evacuations, crowd control and to preserve civil order. Once it's been shown that the animal's hide is too thick for bullets and shoulder-fired rockets to have any effect (and this always proves to be the case), withdraw the soldiers and Marines from the front lines.

A tank seems like a fine monster-killing machine. Take the M1A1 Abrams for example. It's pretty fast, with a top speed of 45 mph, so it can get to where the monster is pretty quickly. The tank can be sealed from chemical and biological threats outside, which should always be a priority when an unknown species descends from the sky or emerges from an inter-dimensional rift in the ocean depths. The tank's 120mm main gun fires high explosive rounds or, even better, kinetic rounds that can punch holes in almost anything. But from the star of Godzilla to the creatures of Pacific Rim, the beasts that will attack will probably shrug off these shells as nothing more than pinpricks. And tanks are tough, but they are not designed to withstand the crushing force of a 300 foot tall dinosaur stomping on them. At the least, the suspension will be wrecked. At the most, the whole vehicle will be crushed and entomb the four crewmembers within.

The Army could play a role in the fight, but only in the air. AH-64 Apache helicopters would be adept monster hunters, except most of its arms are also light. A 30mm chain gun is ferocious, but if a 50-caliber machine gun on a tank has no effect, there's not much hope that the helo can score any hits. The advantage, however, is that the helicopter can stay out of range and aim for sensitive spots on the beasts, like the eyes, mouth, gills and so on. Even better, the Apache can carry 70mm rocket pods and laser-guided Hellfire missiles. A faceful of these would make the King of Monsters himself take notice.

So here's the tactic?use the Apaches to get the monster's attention, and draw it out of the cities. That would enable the other services to take a crack at killing it. (And let's hope the creature can't unfold unexpected wings and take flight, SPOILER ALERT? as happens in Pacific Rim.)

Monster Killing Air Power

The most galling thing about monster movies?besides the marginal, comic-relief characters?is the way they botch the way airplanes kill ground targets.

In most movies, directors want to show the airplane shooting at the target (whether it's a kaiju in Pacific Rim or John McClane in A Good Day to Die Hard) in one frame. So they drop the airplane to a suicidal altitude.

In Pacific Rim, F-22 Raptor pilots careen at chest level with the monsters, spraying them with machine gun fire. (I suppose their missiles have been exhausted.) The stealth warplanes, probably the most maneuverable ever devised by engineers, are then knocked out the sky by the creature's claws. Think about it: Why would a pilot ever get within range of a monster's limbs? By taking a dive bomb approach, the warplane gets more time to fire, and from a safer vantage.

Even so, the Raptor is not the best monster killer. Few fighter aircraft would be, since they are armed with heat-seeking and radar guided missiles meant to kill other airplanes beyond the line of sight. Now that we've seen that altitude and the size of the bomb are the most important factors, it's obvious that a bomber is called for.

In Cloverfield, the survivors of ravaged New York City see the Air Force engage the monster with a B-2 Spirit stealth bomber. Bad choice. The B-2 is an amazing airplane, but the pilots use GPS-guided munitions. Not the best choice when hunting a monster that can cruise around New York City faster than the President of the United States heading to a midtown fundraiser. The B-2 is only a good warplane if it's delivering the final option?a nuke.

Other bombers offer better options. The B-52 Stratofortress may be the most fitting option. Godzilla, the father of all Kaiju, first appeared on screen in 1954. The B-52 was introduced into the Air Force's fleet a year later. More than 60 years and plenty of upgrades later, the airplanes are still flying combat missions. Just this year, B-52s receiving targeting pods that enable ground troops to designate targets with a laser, and the B-52 can drop lots of guided bombs from its 30-foot-long bomb bay.

The problem with the B-52 is that it takes too long to get over a target. So maybe the go-to bomber is the B-1 Lancer, an oft forgotten bomber that can speed to Mach 1.25 when it needs to. When a monster is flattening a city, every second equals tens of millions of dollars in damage. Lancers are not stealthy, so they have been built to be maneuverable enough to dodge antiaircraft missiles?or flying kaiju, if that becomes an issue. B-1s have been using the same targeting pods as the B-52 just received to kill moving targets on the ground.

So here's the plan: Apache helicopters enrage the creature with chain guns and missiles from an acceptable stand-off range. They could also pop up from behind buildings and hills, take their shots, and dip down again. Once the creature is coaxed into an open area, troops on the ground paint it with lasers. The B-1s overhead drop their full load of precision bombs on the thing. Lancers can carry BLU-109 penetrating bombs that can burrow into a bunker before exploding. These could burrow through the hide of a beast and detonate within.

Giant robots may be cool?okay they definitely are?but we can handle monsters just fine when they lumber onto land. If they stay at sea? well, they can stay there as long as they behave. Our submarines would be no match for a native born swimmer with a bad attitude.

Commenting, John McGoldrick, Dart Chief Executive Officer said:

'In March 2013 Dart was restructured so as to focus the business on our extensive, high-prospect shale and CBM acreage in the United Kingdom. As part of the restructure various assets were identified as being noncore to the revised strategy, and we began processes in multiple countries that sought to sell, farm-out or exit these non-core assets. We are thus very pleased to have been able to reach today's agreement, which will see us monetise our previous investment in China, providing us with cash which can be redeployed in support of our core business activities.

We continue to actively pursue monetisation of other non-core assets in various international locations, and at the same time we continue discussions aimed at securing one or more appropriate farm-out arrangements'.

World Peace says NBA not option next season

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- One day after being waived by the Los Angeles Lakers via the amnesty provision, Metta World Peace said he doesn't want any NBA team to make a bid to pick him up off waivers. Not his hometown New York Knicks or the Brooklyn Nets. And not the Lakers' Staples Center cohabitants, the Los Angeles Clippers.

"I don't really want to play for anybody," World Peace said Friday at the Lakers' practice facility. "I don't want to go anywhere. I want to go to China, or coach or play arena football."

World Peace said he has spoken to Yao Ming about joining his former Houston Rockets teammate's Chinese team, the Shanghai Sharks. He said he's had conversations with representatives from "a couple other teams" in China, as well.

    ?

Artest I had a chance to play in New York [in the past]. I wanted to play in New York when I was in my prime and I was young, fierce, lock-down [defender]. Madison Square Garden, that would have been sick. But right now, China is way more adventurous for me.

? -- Metta World Peace on future

World Peace recently completed a trip to Beijing and Qingdao, which further fueled his idea of playing in China should he be waived. A league source told ESPNLosAngeles.com that World Peace has explored the option of playing in China through conversations with former NBA players who have made the leap, figuring out if the path blazed by the likes of Stephon Marbury, Steve Francis and Gilbert Arenas would be right for him.

"You don't live twice," World Peace said. "You're not 33 twice. You won't be able to play in China at a good level again. I wouldn't be able to play in China again averaging, maybe, 40 or more points. That would be fun."

It could all just be an entertaining bluff from World Peace, of course. The Lakers still have to pay him his $7.7 million salary for next season, but he is now on the market and teams with cap room can claim him off waivers via a bidding process.

If a team puts a bid on him and World Peace chooses to retire rather than report to it, he would put his entire salary at risk, including money owed to him by the Lakers. It would be an unprecedented scenario; no player released via amnesty that has been picked up off waivers has gone that route since the current collective bargaining agreement went into place in December 2011.

Should World Peace clear the 48-hour waiver-style bidding process without any team making a bid, he would become an unrestricted free agent and would be free to sign with the team of his choice [including teams above the luxury-tax threshold, which still could offer him the veteran's minimum]. An amnestied player may not be re-signed by the team that released him, however, until the contract that was waived expired [which in World Peace's case would be the summer of 2014].

Jose Morales, a longtime friend and confidant of World Peace, told ESPNNewYork.com earlier this week that the veteran small forward would consider retirement if a team claimed him from a city for which he did not want to play.

"If one of these small-market teams picks him up, he won't be happy with that," Morales said. "He doesn't want to play there."

Morales said World Peace would be open to playing for the Clippers, but if he can't stay in Los Angeles, he would want to play only in New York.

World Peace, however, said the ship has sailed on playing in his hometown.

    SportsNation: Lakers amnesty World Peace

SportsNationThe Lakers cut ties with Metta World Peace on Thursday. Was this a good move? Where will he end up next season?
    ? Cast your votes!

"I had a chance to play in New York [in the past]," World Peace said. "I wanted to play in New York when I was in my prime and I was young, fierce, lock-down [defender]. Madison Square Garden, that would have been sick. But right now, China is way more adventurous for me."

World Peace also said that his surgically repaired left knee -- he had a torn meniscus repaired in March, then had approximately 20 CCs of liquid drained from a popliteal cyst in it -- is still not healthy.

"My knee is sore," said World Peace, who missed the Lakers' final playoff game due to the knee. "I'm definitely not going to be pounding my knee now that I'm amnestied. I'm not even thinking about pounding my knee right now. I'm good with just where I'm at right now."

He did not think his knee would prevent him from playing in China, however, for the next 1-2 years.

"It's a short season," World Peace said. "Thirty-something games. I could show up when I want to show up."

World Peace entered the Lakers' training facility on Friday shortly after the team introduced Nick Young as their newest signee. Young is expected to start at small forward next season, taking World Peace's place.

Despite coming off a resurgent season in which he averaged 12.4 points [up from 7.7 in 2011-12] and 5.0 rebounds [up from 3.4] and improved his shooting percentages from the floor, the 3-point line and the foul line, the 14-year veteran said he wants to "just explore something else."

World Peace met with Lakers general manager Mitch Kupchak on Friday and said there were no hard feelings.

"It was an extra $24 million that was going to have to come from a family-owned business," World Peace said, referring to the approximate total of what it would cost the Lakers to pay his salary, plus luxury taxes in 2013-14, if they did not waive him.

    More on the Lakers

For more news, notes and analysis of the Lakers, check out the Lakers Index. Blog

"I'm really close with the [Buss] family, so I would not want the family-owned business to have to come out of pocket like that. So, I definitely supported the decision."

World Peace said when he heard rumors earlier in the week that he would be waived, he reached out to Kupchak immediately with an alternative plan to keep him in L.A.

"I said, 'Mitch, I want to come back and coach this year,' " World Peace said. "That was the first thing I texted Mitch. I said, 'Don't worry about it.' I said, 'I understand what you have to do and I would love to help the young guys. I want to coach. I want to help y'all win a championship.' "

And if China or coaching doesn't work out, there's always arena football on which to fall back.

"I enjoy myself," World Peace said. "I definitely enjoy myself. I don't do something unless it's going to be fun. I'm telling you, if I have a chance to play arena football, I'm going to do it. You guys will see me there, and you're going to be writing about it."

Dave McMenamin spent five seasons as a staff writer for NBA.com in New York and Los Angeles before joining ESPNLosAngeles.com to cover the Lakers and the NBA.

Brian Baker and college stars to play at Atlantic Station

ATLANTA -- The BB&T Atlanta Open will be Brian Baker's tour debut since suffering a torn lateral meniscus in January. The BB&T Atlanta Open will be held at Atlantic Station July 20-28 and is the first men's event in the Emirates Airline US Open Series.

Baker has written one of the best comeback stories in tennis history. The American had an outstanding junior career that included reaching the 2003 French Open finals and a world No.2 junior ranking. He also recorded wins over some of today's top players, including Novak Djokovic and Jo-Wilfred Tsonga.

After turning pro in 2003, he suffered a string of severe injuries that caused him to miss six years of action. Upon his return in 2012, Baker proved he had not lost his talent by reaching his first career ATP World Tour final in Nice. The former Belmont University men's tennis assistant coach continued to excel, reaching last year's Wimbledon Round of 16 and No. 52 on the Emirates Airline ATP Rankings.

"We are thrilled to be Brian Baker's first tournament back since his Australian Open injury," Tournament Director Bob Bryant said. "Brian has persevered for one of the greatest comebacks in professional sports and the BB&T Atlanta Open is glad to assist him in the next chapter of his career by granting a wild card into our main draw. Additionally, two-time champion Mardy Fish will be returning to action in Atlanta after playing in just one tournament since last year's U.S. Open, giving Atlanta fans the opportunity to witness two great American tennis stories in 2013."

Two players from Georgia universities will be given the opportunity to compete against some of the top tennis players in the world, continuing a tournament tradition. Georgia Tech tennis standout Juan Spir and University of Georgia's Nathan Pasha will receive wild cards into the singles qualifier. John Isner, who will probably be the tournament's top seed, won an NCAA Division I championship with Georgia.

Colombian Spir achieved a No. 44 ITA singles ranking and a No. 10 doubles ranking with partner and Alpharetta native Vikram Hundal. The pair earned All-American honors by advancing to the quarterfinals of the 2013 NCAA Doubles Championship. Spir's results earned him All-ACC Men's Tennis Honors for the third year in a row.

Georgia rising junior and Atlanta resident Pasha recorded a 14-1 record at the No. 6 slot as a freshman and was selected for the SEC All-Freshman Team and named ITA Southeast Region Rookie of the Year. Pasha finished 2013 with a No. 51 national ranking and a 32-15 record. The ITA named Pasha this year's Southeast Region Player to Watch.

Swiss banks near deal on U.S. tax information - WSJ

(Reuters) - A group of Swiss banks is lining up to deliver information to U.S. authorities investigating tax evasion by Americans, potentially moving a long legal battle closer to conclusion, The Wall Street Journal reported late on Thursday.

Last week, the Swiss Cabinet unveiled a program to let about a dozen banks being probed by the Justice Department hand over "leaver lists," or aggregate data on U.S. clients' accounts that had been transferred to other institutions as the United States began targeting overseas tax evasion, the Journal reported.

Some of the country's biggest banks, including Credit Suisse Group AG and Julius Baer Group AG are eligible to apply or already have applied for Swiss government approval to participate in the program, according to people familiar with the situation, the newspaper said.

Credit Suisse and Julius Baer are among more than a dozen banks under formal U.S. investigation of Americans who are suspected of avoiding U.S. taxes by hiding assets overseas.

The Swiss government has agreed that Swiss banks could seek permission to help them to avoid U.S. criminal charges by handing over data, including on bank staff, although they would not be allowed to hand over client names directly.

NFL notes: Cowboys release FB Vickers as focus shifts to TE

The Dallas Cowboys have released fullback Lawrence Vickers, not a surprising move considering their recent emphasis on an offense with two tight ends.

The move announced Friday came after Vickers had back surgery following the season and worked only on the side during offseason practices.

Dallas is unlikely to carry a fullback on the roster after loading up on tight ends behind Jason Witten. The Cowboys drafted Gavin Escobar in the second round and signed veteran Dante Rosario. Second-year player James Hanna is also in the mix.

The 30-year-old Vickers played in all 16 games in his only season in Dallas, finishing with three carries for 11 yards and 13 catches for 104 yards. He had two tackles on special teams.

He also played for Cleveland and Houston.

    Jet on defensive

New York Jets rookie offensive lineman Oday Aboushi, one of the few Palestinian-Americans to play in the NFL, defended himself Friday against a website?s article that called him a "Muslim extremist."

Aboushi was angered by the story, published Tuesday by FrontPage Magazine, as well other comments in response to the piece.

"It is upsetting to see people try and tarnish my reputation without even knowing me," he said in a statement issued by the team. "But I appreciate all the support I have been getting from people of all backgrounds across the city and country."

    story continues below

The Brooklyn-born Aboushi, who now lives in Staten Island, was drafted in the fifth round by the Jets out of Virginia. He is one of just a small handful of Palestinian-American players to enter the NFL, including former linebacker Tarek Saleh, former quarterback Gibran Hamdan, and former defensive lineman Nader Abdallah.

Aboushi told The Associated Press in an interview in May that being a Palestinian-American in the NFL was " an honor" and added that for being able to "kind of break that mold and sort of open the door for other people and show them that it is possible, it?s a great feeling."

The story by FrontPage Magazine said Aboushi?s "latest infraction" came last month when he was in Virginia and "gave a speech at a radical Muslim conference sponsored by a group denying Israel?s right to exist and associated with blatantly anti-Semitic and terrorist propaganda."

The Anti-Defamation issued a statement in Aboushi?s defense, saying "there?s a lot of exaggeration and hyperbole in all the talk about" the player.

"Absolutely nothing in the public record suggests Aboushi is anything other than a young American athlete who takes pride in his Palestinian heritage," ADL director Abraham H. Foxman said. "His participation in a conference organized by the El-Bireh Society, a Palestinian community organization that was until recently defunct, should not be used to tar him as an extremist."

Foxman added that being pro-Palestinian "does not mean you?re an anti-Semite or an extremist. . The record simply does not show that Aboushi has crossed that line."

The Jets, in a statement, said they "strongly believe in diversity, inclusion and tolerance of others."

Dhoni magic sees India to Tri-nation cup win against Sri Lanka

Indian captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni again proved what a great finisher he is as he shepherded the Indian tail to chase down 202 to a close, one wicket win? inthe final of the Tri-nation ODI series against Sri Lanka here today.

Dhoni remained unbeaten on 45 as India lost quick wickets from what had seemed an easy chase after Sri Lanka scored a below par score. Dhoni hit two sixes and a four in the final over, with India needing 15 to win as the target was achieved with two balls to spare and just one wicket left.

Earlier, India benefited immensely after Sri Lanka's middle and lower-order batsmen committed hara-kiri, which saw the team lose eight wickets for just 30 runs before being bundled out for 201.

Sent into bat, Sri Lanka were sitting pretty at 171 for two in the 38th over, but lack of application saw them being packed off with seven balls left in their innings.

Ravindra Jadeja was the most successful Indian bowlers returning figures of 4/24 while there were two wickets apiece for Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin.

Bhuvneshwar made use of seaming conditions to send back Upul Tharanga and Mahela Jayawardene. Incidentally, the duo had punished India with a double-century partnership in the match that the young seamer was dropped.

Sri Lanka then rode on Kumar Sangakkara (71) and Lahiru Thirimanne's 122-run partnership for the third wicket to stage a fightback before their innings disintegrated largely due to some mindless batting. Thirimanne scored 46 off 72 balls.

From a comfortable position with about 12 overs to go, Sri Lanka were left licking their wounds at 193 for seven in the 46th over when skipper Angelo Mathews got out. None of the last six batsmen could reach double figures.

Sri Lanka made a cautious start but after reaching 27 in the seventh over, the islanders suffered their first blow when Bhuvneshwar changed his angle to induce an inside edge from Upul Tharanga.

The ever-consistent Bhuvneshwar was at it again, in the 14th over, as he removed Jayawardene with an innocuous delivery that moved a bit on landing at the Queen's Park Oval.

Losing the experienced Jayawardene so early into the innings was a big blow for the Lankans and they desperately needed solidity at that point of time. Sri Lanka found the answer to their worries in the form of another veteran, Sangakkara, who anchored the innings.

Sangakkara mixed caution with common sense as he realised early that playing expansive shots was not the way to go about the task on this wicket. Playing equally responsibly at the other end was Thirimanne who complemented his senior partner to prop up Sr Lanka's innings.

Joining hands at 49 for two in the 14th over, the two brought up their 100 partnership in the 36th over with Thirimanne cutting Ishant for a boundary.

It was the start of batting powerplay and Lanka were straightaway on the money with both Sangakkara and Thirimanne going after Ishant who conceded 24 runs in the two overs he bowled at that stage of the game.

After being carted for two fours through the offside by Thirimanne, Ishant was at the receiving end of Sangakkara's treatment. Not content hitting two successive fours in the 38th over's first two balls, Sangakkara launched into Ishant smashing his length ball straight down the ground for a six.

But the over turned to be an eventful one as Ishant finally tasted success having Thirimanne caught by Bhuvneshwar at midoff. Soon Sri lanka suffered another jolt as Ashwin joined the party by removing Sangakkara with a tossed-up ball.

Sangakkara's mistimed drive was taken by Vinay Kumar, who ran a few steps backwards from mid-on, to complete a catch.

Ashwin struck again as he had Kusal Perera who was swiftly stumped by Dhoni. After fighting their way back into the match, Sri Lanka were crumbling with Jadeja having Dinesh Chandimal. Mathews followed suit as Sri Lanka's innings approached its end.

Phil Steele has published his 2013 college football strength of schedule rankings. The Florida Gators have the toughest schedule in 2013, while the Old Dominion Monarchs have the easiest.

It should be noted that Old Dominion is actually classified as an FCS Independent for the 2013 season. If you don?t count ODU, then Georgia State has the easiest schedule in his rankings.

How does Steele arrive at his preseason schedule ratings? Steele combines his ?9 sets of Power Ratings? with the amount of home and away games. This differs from the NCAA method which is strictly based on the opponent winning percentage from the previous year.

In 2012, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish had the toughest schedule according to Steele?s rankings. They finished the season 12-1, losing only to Alabama in the BCS National Championship Game.

The easiest preseason schedule in 2012? The UTSA Roadrunners, who finished 8-4 overall and 3-3 in the WAC.

    Phil Steele?s 10 toughest schedules for 2013

    1. Florida (2012 ranking: 5) ? Florida tops Phil Steele?s list and it?s hard to argue with him, although I ranked them 5th in my column for USA TODAY Sports. For the first time in 10 years, the Gators travel to face the Miami Hurricanes. Arkansas and Vanderbilt visit while games against LSU, Georgia (at Jacksonville) and South Carolina are on the road. A visit from arch-rival Florida State ends the season.
    2. Oklahoma (2012 ranking: 20) ? OU?s non-conference slate is highlighted by a visit from Tulsa and a trip to Notre Dame. In Big 12 play, the Sooners get Baylor, Kansas State, Oklahoma State and Texas (at the Cotton Bowl) on the road and TCU, Texas Tech, and West Virginia at home.
    3. California (2012 ranking: 31) ? Cal faces two Big Ten and possible Top 25 teams on their non-conference slate ? Northwestern and Ohio State. The Golden Bears host Pac-12 foes Arizona, Oregon State, and USC and travel to Oregon, Stanford, and UCLA.
    4. Purdue (2012 ranking: 49) ? Purdue has one of the tougher non-conference schedules, which includes a trip to Cincinnati and visits from Notre Dame and Northern Illinois. The Boilermakers get Nebraska and Ohio State at home, but play at Michigan State, Penn State, and Wisconsin.
    5. Arkansas (2012 ranking: 18) ? The Razorbacks open at home vs. a tough UL Lafayette squad and later travel to Rutgers. In the SEC, the Hogs have a brutal four-game stretch vs. Texas A&M, at Florida, vs. South Carolina, and at Alabama. Arkansas also plays at Ole Miss and LSU.
    6. Iowa State (2012 ranking: 3) ? The Hawkeyes host in-state rival Iowa and later travel to Tulsa. Big 12 home games include Texas, Oklahoma State, TCU and Kansas. The Cyclones travel to Texas Tech, Baylor, Kansas State, Oklahoma, and West Virginia.
    7. Colorado (2012 ranking: 32) ? The Rams have a light non-conference schedule, which kicks off with their annual battle against Colorado State in Denver. Colorado has a tough Pac-12 slate, which features home games vs. Oregon, Arizona, California, and USC and road games vs. Oregon State, Arizona State, UCLA, Washington, and Utah.
    8. Stanford (2012 ranking: 12) ? The Cardinal open the season against a good San Jose State squad followed by a trip to Army. Stanford hosts Pac-12 games against Arizona State, Washington, UCLA, Oregon, and California and visits Washington State, Utah, Oregon State, and USC. A visit from Notre Dame looms in the regular-season finale.
    9. Kentucky (2012 ranking: 10) ? Kentucky?s schedule, which was first in my rankings, begins with Western Kentucky in Nashville. Two weeks later, the Wildcats host bitter rival Louisville. Their SEC slate is even tougher with likely preseason Top 10 teams Alabama and Florida at home and Georgia and South Carolina on the road.
    10. Kansas (2012 ranking: 11) ? The biggest challenge on Kansas? 2013 non-conference schedule is Louisiana Tech. In conference play, the Jayhawks host Texas Tech, Oklahoma, Baylor, West Virginia, and Kansas State and travel to TCU, Texas, Oklahoma State, and Iowa State.

An SEC school owns the toughest schedule according to Steele. The SEC also has three teams in his Top 10, which is tied with the Big Ten and Pac-12. The Big Ten is the only other conference with a team in the Top 10 (Purdue).
