Home prices rise by most in seven years in May: CoreLogic

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Home prices racked up their biggest annual gain in more than seven years in May, with more increases expected through the summer months as the sector continues to mend, data analysis firm CoreLogic said on Tuesday.

Prices rose 2.6 percent from April and were up 12.2 percent compared to May last year, the biggest year-over-year increase since February 2006, CoreLogic said.

Excluding distressed sales, prices were up 11.6 percent on a yearly basis. Distressed sales include properties that have been seized by lenders and short sales, where the struggling homeowner is allowed to sell the property for less than the outstanding mortgage.

The recovery in the housing sector has gained momentum this year, with tight inventory pushing prices higher. Still, prices nationally remain cheap compared to during the housing boom, which has spurred demand from investors and homeowners.

The acceleration in prices compared to a year ago was in line with the closely watched S&P-Case/Shiller report which showed prices rose more than 12 percent on an annual basis in April.

"Across the country, pent up demand and continued low interest rates are fueling strong demand for a limited inventory of properties," Anand Nallathambi, CoreLogic's chief executive officer, said in a statement.

"We expect that trend to continue to drive up prices throughout the balance of the summer months."

The report forecast prices will rise by another 2.9 percent in June for a yearly gain of 13.2 percent.

Nevada saw the biggest price increases, followed by California, Arizona, Hawaii and Oregon.

TSA Is Instagramming the Crazy Stuff It Confiscates at Checkpoints

What is Instagram for if not bragging oh so subtly about the stuff you're doing. It's true for rich kids on fancy vacations, and apparently, it's true for the Transportation Safety Administration, which has been posting images of the absurd stuff passengers are trying to carry on planes every day.

Brother MFC-9330CDW

The Brother MFC-9330CDW, a color laser-class multifunction printer (MFP), is basically the same as the comparably priced Brother MFC-9340CDW, except that the latter has a duplexing automatic document feeder (ADF) for scanning, copying, and faxing two-sided documents, while the MFC-9330CDW's ADF supports only simplex (one-sided) scanning, copying, and faxing. Though both have the same rated printing speed, in our tests the MFC-9330CDW showed itself to be somewhat faster.

The MFC-9330CDW can print, copy, scan, and fax. It lets you fax either from your computer (PC Fax), or as a standalone device without needing a computer, in which case you enter the numbers on the MFP's touch-sensitive keypad. Its ADF can hold up to 35 sheets. A front-facing port lets you print JPEG and PDF files from (and scan files to) a USB thumb drive.

As an LED printer, the MFC-9330CDW uses LEDs in place of lasers as a light source; LED printers are still considered laser class. It measures a reasonably compact 16.1 by 16.1 by 19.1 inches (HWD) and weighs 51.1 pounds. The front panel houses a 3.7-inch color touch screen. To its right is the backlit keypad, which only appears when you press Fax or other functions that require that you enter numbers. The only physical button on the panel is the start/stop button.

Paper capacity is 250 sheets, plus a one-page manual feed slot; no additional paper handling is available. The automatic duplexer permits printing on both sides of a sheet of paper.

The MFC-9330CDW can connect to a PC via a USB cable, or to a network via Ethernet or Wi-Fi. It can connect to a compatible device via WiFi Direct, without the need to go through a Wi-Fi network. For mobile printing, it supports Apple AirPrint, Brother iPrint&Scan, Google Cloud Print, and Cortado WorkPlace. I tested it over an Ethernet connection, with the drivers installed on a computer running Windows Vista.

Brother MFC-9330CDW

Printing Speed
The MFC-9330CDW printed out our business applications suite (as timed with QualityLogic's hardware and software) at 6.8 effective pages per minute (ppm), a reasonable speed considering its 23 page per minute rated speed for both color and monochrome printing, which should be about its print speed when printing text only. (Our test suite includes text pages, graphics pages, and pages combining text and graphics.) Its tested speed was a page per minute faster than the Brother MFC-9340CDW (5.8 ppm) despite their identical rated speed of 23 pages per minute, and a touch faster than the Brother MFC-9130CW (6.5 ppm), rated at 19 ppm.

The Editors' Choice Dell 2155cn, rated at 24 ppm for both color and black output, tested at 5.9 ppm, while the Canon Color imageClass MF8580Cdw, rated at 21ppm in its default duplex mode and 10 ppm in simplex, tested at 4.9 ppm in duplex and 6 ppm in ad-hoc simplex testing.

Output Quality
Overall output quality was slightly below par due to slightly sub-par graphics and photos. The MFC-9330CDW's text quality was on par for a laser-class printer, which is to say very good. It's fine for any business use short of ones that require very small fonts, such as demanding desktop publishing applications.

Graphics quality was a touch sub-par for a color laser-class printer. Most graphics had mild banding, a regular pattern of faint striations. Some dark backgrounds had a faded or blotchy look. The printer had trouble differentiating between darker and lighter tones in a gradient, with little tonal difference between them. The output was fine for in-house use short of formal reports; I'd be hesitant to hand the output to clients I was seeking to impress.

Photo quality was slightly sub-par. Colors were generally on the dull side. A couple of prints showed some banding. Other issues were dithering, and mild tinting in a couple of prints. The photo quality is adequate for printing out recognizable images from files or Web sites, but that's about it.

The MFC-9330CDW was faster in our testing than the Brother MFC-9340CDW, despite their identical rated speeds. The Brother MFC-9340CDW does have the advantage of the duplexing ADF: the ability to scan, copy, or fax two-sided documents at a single pass, a feature shared by the Canon Color imageClass MF8580Cdw. The Canon has better output than the MFC-9330CDW or the other Brother MFPs mentioned here, though it's somewhat pricier. The Editors' Choice Dell 2155cn has the best output of them all, though it lacks features like an auto-duplexer, a duplexing ADF, and Wi-Fi connectivity.

The Brother MFC-9330CDW is a capable small-office color laser-class MFP with decent speed, though it's outclassed by the Brother MFC-9340CDW, which has the same estimated street price but adds the duplexing ADF. It is best for a small office that does mostly text printing and needs occasional color, yet doesn't require the graphics and photo quality needed for, say, taking the printing of marketing materials in house.

(AP) ? Serena Williams joined a growing list of marquee names eliminated early at this wild and unpredictable Wimbledon.

The defending champion and five-time Wimbledon winner failed to close out a see-saw third set Monday, dropping the last four games to Sabine Lisicki of Germany and losing 6-2, 1-6, 6-4 in the fourth round. The result ended Williams' career-best 34-match winning streak.

It was the latest in a string of improbable exits to jolt the tournament, with defending champion Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal knocked out in the first three days along with Maria Sharapova and Victoria Azarenka.

"I probably couldn't be more disappointed," Williams said. "I think I may have backed off of a success. I was playing something successful. I didn't continue that path. The result didn't go the way it could have gone had I continued to play the way I did in the second set."

Of the two big favorites still in the tournament, second-seeded Andy Murray stayed on course for a second straight final by beating 20th-seeded Mikhail Youzhny of Russia 6-4, 7-6 (5), 6-1, while top-ranked Novak Djokovic played Tommy Haas later.

After dropping the first set, Williams looked to be cruising, winning nine straight games to take a 3-0 lead in the third. The players then traded breaks to give Williams a 4-2 lead, but the American couldn't win another game despite having four break points at 4-3.

Those would have given her a chance to serve for the match. Instead, Lisicki held, broke again, and converted her second match point with a forehand winner.

"I'm still shaking," Lisicki said in a post-match interview, covering her face with her hands to wipe away tears. "I'm just so happy."

Williams said her serve ? usually her main weapon ? let her down in the third set.

"I felt that I was on the verge of winning," she said. "At that point I just was physically unable to hold serve. ... You have to be ready and willing to hold your serve. I wasn't willing or able, probably didn't even want to hold my serve today."

Lisicki reached the semifinals at the All England Club in 2011 but this will rank as her biggest victory at the grass-court Grand Slam. She has now eliminated the reigning French Open champion the last four times she played Wimbledon, having missed the tournament in 2010. She ousted Sharapova in the fourth round last year.

Murray, facing the ever-increasing pressure to become the first British man since 1936 to win Wimbledon, was in trouble in the second set. He trailed 5-2 against Youzhny, a 2012 Wimbledon quarterfinalist, but broke back when the Russian served for the set at 5-4. Then, down 5-3 in the tiebreaker, Murray took the set's last four points. He broke immediately in the third, and cruised from there to set up a meeting with Fernando Verdasco of Spain.

Murray is the only British player left in the tournament, after 19-year-old Laura Robson lost. She couldn't recover from her missed chances in the first set and fell 7-6 (5), 7-5 to Kaia Kanepi of Estonia, failing to become the first British woman in the quarters of any Grand Slam since 1984.

Robson, the first British woman to reach the second week at Wimbledon since 1998, served for the first set at 5-4 but was broken, then led 5-2 in the tiebreaker. She double-faulted at 5-4, with neither serve coming close to going in ? the first one went about 5 feet long and the second bounced into the net.

"I had my chances here and there and I just didn't take them," Robson said. "At that point, I was just trying to will myself to play unbelievable tennis when just making a serve would have been fine. But, as cliche as it sounds, it's all part of the learning experience. The more I get myself into those kinds of situations, the more I'm going to benefit."

Instead of a big headline Williams vs. Robson matchup, Kanepi will now face Lisicki in the quarterfinals.

Former champion Petra Kvitova, last year's runner-up Agnieszka Radwanska and No. 4 David Ferrer all avoided upsets to advance, as did sixth-seeded Li Na of China.

Juan Martin del Potro, playing with his left knee heavily taped after a scary fall in the previous round, beat Andreas Seppi 6-4, 7-6 (2), 6-3. He said his knee was "really painful" but that he hopes it will be better by the time he plays fourth-seeded David Ferrer on Wednesday.

Ferrer overcame another slow start to beat Ivan Dodig of Croatia 6-7 (3), 7-6 (6), 6-1, 6-1. Having trailed twice in the previous round before winning in five sets, Ferrer struggled initially to create opportunities on Dodig's serve and was two points from going two sets down against the Croat. But he dominated the final two sets, breaking Dodig five times and clinching the match with a forehand winner.

Despite Williams' loss, there's still an American woman in the quarters after Sloane Stephens beat 19-year-old Monica Puig of Puerto Rico 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.

On a busy day at Wimbledon with every round-of-16 match to be played, Kvitova was the first to reach the last eight, beating Carla Suarez Navarro of Spain 7-6 (5), 6-3. She will play Kirsten Flipkens of Belgium, who reached her first career Grand Slam quarterfinal by ousting Flavia Pennetta of Italy 7-6 (2), 6-3 ? a year after her ranking plummeted to 262nd because of injuries.

Poland will send two men into the quarterfinals for the first time after 24th-seeded Jerzy Janowicz and 130th-ranked Lukasz Kubot each won five-set matches.

The big-serving Janowicz outlasted Jurgen Melzer 3-6, 7-6 (1), 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, while Kubot defeated Adrian Mannarino 4-6, 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. They'll play each other Wednesday with the winner becoming the country's first Grand Slam semifinalist.

In other results, Verdasco beat Frenchman Kenny De Schepper 6-4, 6-4, 6-4, and 15th-seeded Marion Bartoli ousted Karin Knapp of Italy 6-2, 6-3. Radwanska rallied to beat Tsvetana Pironkova of Bulgaria 4-6, 6-3, 6-3.

With Julian Assange Taking the Spotlight, Edward Snowden's Future Looks Grim

In a rare interview on Sunday's This Week, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange didn't say where NSA leaker Edward Snowden is, and didn't say where he was immediately going. But he did say one thing quite clearly: He, Julian Assange, is a lot like Edward Snowden.

Asked by host George Stephanopoulos about Snowden's future, Assange said that Snowden's "situation is very similar to the situation that I face." He said that, like WikiLeaks, Snowden is being faced with rhetoric about the dangers of leaks that, for WikiLeaks, were "all proved to be false."

Faced with a question about a leaked quote in TIME Magazine, where Assange said that with his WikiLeaks revelations he hoped to bring about "the total annihilation of the current U.S. regime" and if that is still his goal today, Assange denied that he ever said that, with a sterling defense of "Yeah, well, I mean TIME Magazine."

The really ominous part of the interview came when Assange was asked whether or not he possessed Snowden's NSA documents: "Look, there is no stopping the publishing process at this stage. Great care has been taken to make sure Mr. Snowden cannot be pressured by any state to stop the publication process."

But there are serious problems with the Julian Assange Takeover, and they are quickly boiling up. Last week, Ecuador's President Rafael Correa slowed down Snowden's asylum process because he was worried that the WikiLeaks leader was taking over the role of his country's government. The Guardianreported that Correa killed a temporary travel document that would have helped get Snowden out of the Moscow airport where he has reportedly been staying for the last week. In leaked communications, Ecuador officials seemed bitter by how much attention Assange was taking, with a Ecuador's U.S. ambassador telling a presidential spokesman "I suggest talking to Assange to better control the communications. From outside, [Assange] appears to be running the show."

Assange, for his part, criticized interference from the U.S. in Snowden's asylum search on Sunday, saying that "Joseph Biden, the day before yesterday, personally called President Correa trying to pressure him. That's not acceptable."

The increasingly cold-feet are coming from a nation that knows Assange well: Assange has been camped out in Ecuador's embassy in London for over a year as a means of avoiding extradition. Just two weeks ago, Ecuador's foreign minister even paid Assange a visit.

And tensions over Snowden and Assange in Ecuador aren't just at the governmental level. With the Obama administration threatening to keep in place tariffs on rose imports from Ecuador, flower growers in the country have a direct financial interest in the outcome of Snowden's flight. "We can't put the interests of 14 million Ecuadoreans at risk because of a 29-year-old hacker whom we don't even know," Gino Descalzi, who employees 280 people in the rose business, told the AP. "This gentleman doesn't mean anything to us."

Nigerian commission reports troops kill, torture, rape civilians in Islamist uprising

Nigeria?s National Human Rights Commission said Sunday it has credible reports security forces are killing, torturing, illegally detaining and raping civilians in a fight to halt an Islamist uprising in northeast Nigeria that has killed nearly 2,000 people since 2010.

A report by the commission said troops retaliating against civilians have torched homes and tried to hide evidence of gross violations by disposing of bodies.

More Related to this Story

In the most egregious case, where troops went on a rampage in several villages after a soldier was killed in mid-April in the fishing village of Baga, it quoted police as saying soldiers ?started shooting indiscriminately at anybody in sight including domestic animals. This reaction resulted to loss of lives and massive destruction of properties.?

The military said 36 people were killed, most of them extremist fighters. Witnesses told the AP at the time that some 187 civilians were killed.

The commission said the killings also came after militants had ransacked an armoury, with subsequent reports indicating the extremists enjoyed an increase in the calibre and quantity of weapons and ?had become both more organized and emboldened by their apparent successes despite the enhanced security presence.?

That contradicted military reports that they have taken control of the region in a military emergency covering thee states and one-sixth of the sprawling country. Instead, they appear to have pushed the fighters into rocky mountains with caves where it is more difficult to flush them out. The extremists regularly attack towns and villages.

The commission, a government body, issued an interim report saying it would finalize it when its investigators are able to visit the area where soldiers have cut mobile phone and Internet connections. A state of emergency was declared May 14 when the government said extremists from the Boko Haram terrorist group had taken control of some towns and villages.

The insurgency poses the biggest threat in years to security in Nigeria, Africa?s most populous nation of 160 million and the continent?s biggest oil producer.

Communities trapped between the Islamist militants and the security forces ?reportedly live in desperate fear and destitution,? the commission said.

It warned of an imminent public health emergency and food shortages because farmers have been forced from their fields.

Food prices have nearly trebled, the commission said, with a 50-kilogram sack of rice selling for up to 18,000 naira ($112.50 USD) from 7,000 naira ($44 USD).

Some medical experts from the region have reported a notable upsurge in sudden deaths, heart attacks and aneurysms, it said.

Northeast Nigeria already presents ?the worst statistics of human development in Nigeria generally,? it said.

Maternal mortality rates were three times the national average of 545 deaths for every 100,000 live births, and reports reaching the commission suggest the emergency has even more mothers dying in childbirth.

Northeast Nigeria is the poorest region in the country, with government statistics indicating 75 per cent of the population lives from hand to mouth on less than $1 a day.

The commission?s interim findings corroborated AP reports from the region. Militants who began by targeting government personnel and health workers ? they preach that Western religion and medicine are forbidden ? are increasingly targeting civilians in attacks on schools and vaccination campaigns.

?The Commission equally received several credibly attested allegations of gross violations by officials of the JTF (joint task force of police and military), including allegations of summary executions, torture, arbitrary detention amounting to internment and outrages against the dignity of civilians, as well as rape,? the rights commission said.

?In particular, we have received persistent and credibly attested allegations of indiscriminate disposal of dead human remains by personnel of both the JTF and the Borno State Environmental Protection Agency.?

The military and presidential spokesmen did not respond to requests for comment.
