(AP) ? Democrats are playing defense in governors' races in 2012, protecting eight seats ? some in conservative states like North Carolina and Montana ? while Republicans are safeguarding just four. But one of those is in Wisconsin, where a recall effort against incumbent Scott Walker has emerged as a national test of the confrontational measures many GOP governors have taken to balance state budgets.

Both parties agree the landscape is quite different than in 2010, where 37 states elected governors at the height of the economic downturn and amid roiling voter anger over government spending and debt. Republicans netted 6 new seats that year, including important presidential bellwether states like Pennsylvania, Michigan, Ohio and Wisconsin. There are currently 29 Republican governors, 20 Democrats and 1 independent.

This year, just 8 seats are up for grabs against a backdrop of a slowly improving national economy and a presidential contest that will draw a broader range of voters. Republicans are casting the contests as a referendum on their own party's leadership in tough times while Democrats are calling it a potential course correction after two years of GOP overreach.

"The public in a number of states in 2010 thought they were sending the message that with new leadership in the governor's office they'd get an accelerated recovery. Instead they got a hard right turn in ideology," said Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley, chairman of the Democratic Governors Association in an interview.

O'Malley pointed to Ohio, where voters soundly rejected a ballot measure backed by Republican governor John Kasich to curtail public employee unions, and Florida, where Rick Scott's aggressive budget cuts and remote style helped sink his approval ratings to record lows last year.

"The governors we elected over the last couple of cycles have come into office, made tough gutsy decisions that haven't always been popular. But they've been honest enough to tell their voters we can't afford to do things the same way," said Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell, chairman of the Republican Governors Association.

Nowhere are the parties' contrasting visions on more vivid display than in Wisconsin, where Democrats submitted more than a million petitions in January to recall Walker, whose efforts to slash state worker benefits and end their collective bargaining rights drew fierce protests from union members and other activists.

The special election is expected to take place in June, with a likely primary in May to select a Democrat to challenge Walker. Former Dane County Executive Kathleen Falk, a favorite of labor leaders, is expected to run, and Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett is also exploring a race.

Both parties agree that the Wisconsin recall is likely to be the closest governor's race of the year, and possibly the most expensive.

Democrats have modest hopes for a pickup in Indiana, where Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels is stepping down after two terms. Rep. Mike Pence, a 6-term Republican from eastern Indiana, is running to replace Daniels, but John Gregg, a Democrat and former state House speaker, is mounting a strong effort.

Indiana is heavily Republican and Obama's popularity in the state has dropped considerably since winning the state in 2008, the first Democratic presidential hopeful in 40 years to do so. But the DGA's O'Malley said the strengthening auto industry, both nationally and in Indiana, could boost Gregg's chances.

Some states with elections this year are expecting to retain current governors, including Republicans Jack Dalrymple of North Dakota and Gary Herbert of Utah and Democrats Jack Markell of Delaware and Peter Shumlin of Vermont.

But from there, Republicans expect to be on offense.

? In Washington state, where two-term Democrat Christine Gregoire is stepping down, Rob McKenna, the popular GOP attorney general, is running to replace her. Washington has not elected a Republican governor in 30 years, but party leaders say McKenna is a good fit for the state which Obama won handily in 2008 and will likely do so again this time. Longtime Rep. Jay Inslee is expected to be the Democratic contender.

? In Montana, a conservative state where Democratic Gov. Brian Schweitzer is stepping down after two terms, Republicans are enthusiastic about their chances despite a June primary that has drawn at least 7 hopefuls so far. Former Rep. Rick Hill is considered a favorite. Attorney General Steve Bullock leads the Democratic field.

? In Missouri, where incumbent Democrat Jay Nixon is seeking re-election, Republicans hope the state's slow economic recovery and an expected tight presidential and senate contest could help their chances of recapturing the seat. Dave Spence, a wealthy suburban St. Louis businessman, is among the candidates running in the August GOP primary.

? In West Virginia, a rematch is shaping up between incumbent Democrat Earl Ray Tomblin and Republican Bill Maloney, who came within 3 points of beating Tomblin in a 2011 special election despite almost no political experience and little name recognition. The RGA's McDonnell predicted Obama's presence at the top of the ticket this time was likely to drag down Tomblin. Obama lost the state to Republican John McCain in 2008 by 13 points.

? In North Carolina, where incumbent Democrat Bev Perdue is stepping down after a single rocky term, Republicans are enthusiastic about Pat McCrory, a former Charlotte mayor who came within a few points of beating Perdue in 2008. Former Rep Bob Etheridge and Lt. Gov. Walter Dalton are among the Democrats expected to compete in the May primary.

? In New Hampshire, where Democrat John Lynch is retiring, Republican conservative activists Ovide Lamontagne and Kevin Smith are vying for the Republican nomination while former state Senate Majority Leader Maggie Hassan is a favorite in the Democratic primary. New Hampshire went heavily Republican in 2010 after a gradual Democratic shift in the prior decade. It's considered a swing state in this year's presidential contest and could even lean Republican if former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney is the GOP nominee. Obama won the state handily in 2008.

Republicans also have a significant financial advantage in the 2012 contest. The RGA raised $44 million in 2011 and had nearly $27 million cash on hand in the group's most recent filing, while the Democrats raised $20 million and had about $12 million on hand.

If you hadn't noticed, it's Mobile World Congress this week and Google's showing off its enormous booth packed to the gills with smiling green Androids. Andy Rubin insouciantly added that the Android Marketplace has reached its latest milestone: there are now 450,000 apps available for the platform. Other pertinent stats are that over a billion apps are downloaded every month and that 850,000 Android devices are activated each day -- meaning that there's more than 300 million of them worldwide. Of course, that's not the real story here at MWC, it's that the company have brought along a bedazzling booth for guests to glue as many false jewels to their Galaxy Nexus back-plate as their self-respect can handle.

Old Dominion University allows gay, lesbian students to live together

NORFOLK, Va.?Old Dominion University will allow gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgendered students to live together in an effort to help them learn better says the school.?

But some students wonder if it will do more harm than good.

The GLBT student community will have its own set of dorm rooms.

"I don't think it's a good concept, just singling them out and sticking them all together,? says Sally, a junior at the university.

It's called "living learning communities,? which puts groups of people together with the same goals and interests.? For example, students learning careers in engineering, health professionals, as well as women studying science and engineering are part of the living learning community concept.

"Just because you're gay it's not gonna make you have things in common with them, same as anybody else,? says Sally.

The GLBT students and their supporters had to go through an application process to be eligible for this.? They're given a set of 9 dorm rooms inside of a residence hall with other students.

During a time when the GLBT lifestyle is becoming more acceptable, NewsChannel 3 asked ODU? if this new concept will cause problems with gay students living openly with other students.

"Living on a floor with people who may not be accepting of that, you take that into consideration? Housing is open to everyone who applies. This isn?t going to change that," says Ellen Neufeldt of student engagement.

But she says they did research to make sure they are in areas that are away from harassment, even though some students don't feel like it will be a benefit.

"Everybody knows exactly who you are. It's just calling yourself out,? says Jourdan, a freshman at the university.?

(AP Photo/Musadeq Sadeq)

(AP) ? NATO's top military commander said Friday that an investigation into this week's Quran burnings at a U.S. base in Afghanistan is pushing ahead and called on Afghans to be patient and exercise restraint.

U.S. Gen. John Allen's call came as Afghan security forces were put on high alert to deal with expected demonstrations around the country after Friday prayers.

"Working together with the Afghan leadership is the only way for us to correct this major error and ensure that it never happens again," Allen said in a statement.

He called on everyone around Afghanistan "to exercise patience and restraint as we continue to gather the facts."

The U.S.-led military coalition says the Muslim holy books were sent by mistake on Feb. 19 to a garbage burn pit at Bagram Air Field, near the capital, and that the case is under investigation. The explanation and multiple apologies from U.S. officials have yet to calm outrage over the incident, which has also heightened tension between international troops and their Afghan partners.

The country has been wracked by three days of violence that has claimed 13 lives, including two U.S. soldiers over the burnings of the Muslim holy book.

The level and intensity of any demonstrations Friday will also test whether Thursday's apology by President Barack Obama to the Afghan people over the incident will have any impact.

Afghans have so far ignored an appeal by President Hamid Karzai and other officials for calm.

On Thursday, thousands of protesters, some shouting "Long live Islam!" and "Death to America!" staged demonstrations across Afghanistan for a third day. Protesters climbed the walls of a U.S. base in the east of the country, threw stones inside and adorned an outside wall with the Taliban's trademark white flag.

The protests sparked clashes with Afghan security forces that left at least five demonstrators dead. A Norwegian soldier was wounded by a hand grenade hurled into a coalition compound.

On Wednesday, six people died in similar protests in Kabul and three other provinces.

The unrest started Tuesday, when Afghan workers at the sprawling American base north of Kabul noticed that Qurans and other Islamic texts were in the trash that coalition troops dumped into a pit where garbage is burned. Some Afghan workers burned their fingers as they tried to salvage some of the books. Afghan government officials said initial reports indicated four Qurans were burned.

The materials had been taken from a library at Parwan Detention Facility, which adjoins the base, because they contained extremist messages or inscriptions. Writing inside a Quran is forbidden in the Islamic faith, and it is unclear whether the handwritten messages were found in the holy book or other reading materials.

A military official said it appeared that detainees at the prison were exchanging messages by making notations in the texts.

A delegation of Afghan religious leaders, lawmakers and government representatives visited Bagram as part of the investigation. They issued a statement late Thursday calling for an end to protests and accused insurgents of infiltrating the gatherings to foment violence. They said they expected those responsible for the Quran burning to be prosecuted through the U.S. military court system.

Afghan authorities said demonstrations were staged inside the capital and in seven of Afghanistan's 34 provinces.

The deadliest was held outside an American base in the Khogyani district of Nangarhar province in eastern Afghanistan. Two protesters were killed by Afghan police and an Afghan soldier turned his gun on American troops, killing two.

Nancy Grace Defends Whitney Houston Comments, Gets Served by Dan Abrams on GMA

Dan Abrams is our new hero.

The Good Morning America host remained calm and reasonable in the face of Nancy Grace's condescending absurdity today, as he tried to get Grace to admit that she shouldn't have wondered about whether or not someone pushed Whitney Houston's body under water in her hotel room last Saturday.

What prompted Grace to hint at that possibility? Nothing in this case, merely her experience as an attorney overall, which gives her a unique view on what comes next.

"There is nothing delicate or nice about a murder, a death, an unexpected death, or an autopsy," Grace said. "What that means in the real world, not the ivory tower of Harvard Law School... an autopsy, of why her body was transported to the Coroner's Office, is to determine cause of death whether it be overdose, natural causes, accident, or homicide. It is not a homicide and I am thankful for that, but I still want the truth."

Okay. That makes her the same as about 100 million other Americans.

Why utter a word about anyone shoving Whitney's head under water? Abrams tried to get his guest to focus on this specific question.

"I'm arguing with you over going on television and making a comment that I think was rightfully viewed as inappropriate," he says in the video above. "And sometimes there's a time to say 'you know what, I shouldn't have said that in retrospect. A nicer way to say that, or a more accurate way to say that, would have been x, y, or z.'"

Of course, Grace remained obstinate, and Robin Roberts ended the segment with a simple, obvious point. Well... an obvious point to anyone not looking cash in on a well-publicized death.

Why not just wait until the autopsy results are released before commenting at all?

Russians alarmed by rash of teenage suicides (AP)

MOSCOW ? A rash of teenage suicides in Russia has set off alarm bells and experts are urging the government to take immediate action.

Russia has the world's third-highest rate of suicide among teenagers aged 15-to-19, with about 1,500 taking their own lives every year, according to a recent UNICEF report. The rate is higher only in the neighboring former Soviet republics of Belarus and Kazakhstan.

In recent years, there have been 19-to-20 annual suicides per 100,000 teenagers in Russia ? three times the world average, Boris Polozhy of the respected Serbsky psychiatric center in Moscow said Friday.

"Until the highest authorities see suicide as a problem, our joint efforts will be unlikely to yield any results," he said.

In the southwestern Siberian region of Tuva, the rate reaches a staggering 120 suicides per 100,000 teenagers, while the nearby region of Buryatiya has an average rage of 77 per 100,000. Both regions are impoverished and have high crime and alcoholism rates.

Two 14-year-old girls in the Moscow suburb of Lobnya killed themselves this week by jumping off the roof of a 14-story building while holding hands. They had skipped classes for two weeks and were terrified of what their parents would do to them once they found out, Russian media quoted their friends as saying.

Several other recent teen suicides have been reported elsewhere in Russia.

Experts say that domestic violence and problems in schools are among the main reasons why adolescents take their lives.

Relations between Russian children and their parents are often "notable for their cruelty,"

said Natalya Sinyagina of the Education Ministry's Center for Education Issues in Moscow. "(But) school is also not the safest place for kids."

Russia's public schools are underfunded, staffed with poorly paid teachers and have been widely criticized for neglecting the issue of bullying among children.

"We've seen cases when a child says 'Better kill me, I'm not going to school,'" Sinyagina said.

Internet-savvy and handy with cell phones and computers, Russian teens spend hours on social networking websites and idolize pop stars just like teens elsewhere in the world. Experts say some teens romanticize early death and suicide, perceiving them as games, and are attracted by online suicide clubs that list the best ways to take your life.

"Video games and information found online have devaluated death," says Urvan Parfentyev of the Moscow-based Center for Safe Internet.

"I have seen websites that offer a thousand ways of killing oneself," said Zurab Kikelidze, Health Ministry's chief psychologist.

Pavel Astakhov, the government-appointed children's rights ombudsman, said school psychologists should find and help suicidal teenagers on social networking websites and crack down on cyber-bullying, another widespread cause of teenage suicides.

Surgery kit said to belong to Nazi pulled from auction

A surgical kit advertised as belonging to a Nazi concentration camp commandant has been withdrawn from sale by an auction house in England.

Grace Cloke, a spokeswoman at Villa Hall Auctions, said Thursday it was withdrawn "on the recommendation of police" after the auction house received "nasty" phone calls.

The auctioneer said the box contains blades, scissors, a saw and straps apparently used for tourniquets ? and is printed with the name Anton Burger.

The auctioneer had identified it as belonging to Anton Burger, an SS commander of the Theresienstadt camp.

However, the German newspaper Die Welt has questioned that, reporting it was manufactured by the Anton Buerger company in Dresden.

Cloke says she was unaware of the report, and didn't know who connected the box with the commander.

An earlier report in the Daily Telegraph said Cloke described information about the memorabilia as "scarce". It said the tools were being sold off by the unidentified widow of a Jewish man whose parents were Holocaust survivors.

A report published Thursday by Britain's Jewish Chronicle said the auction sale had been cancelled following protests.

Sarah Jessica Parker headlines celeb-filled gala (AP)

NEW YORK ? A chance to kiss the buff, shirtless Richard Gere of the early `80s? Sold, for $20,000!

It wasn't exactly a time machine that was auctioned off at the annual amfAR AIDS charity gala kicking off New York Fashion Week on Wednesday evening. Rather, it was a black-and-white portrait of Gere by famed photographer Robert Mapplethorpe, who himself died of AIDS in 1989. Displaying the photo from the stage, cookbook author and TV personality Padma Lakshmi kissed it a few times to demonstrate its appeal.

The gala, held in the cavernous event space at Cipriani Wall Street, is a staple event on the fringes of New York Fashion Week. This year, it was hosted by Sarah Jessica Parker, and featured performances by Brooklyn rapper Theophilius London, R&B singer Janelle Monae, and opera singer Michelle Johnson, who sang in tribute to the late Elizabeth Taylor ? founder of the AIDS charity.

But whatever was happening onstage, it was at least as interesting to stargaze among the guests, an eclectic mix of fashion, Hollywood, music and medicine. Fashion luminaries included designer Kenneth Cole, "Project Runway" host Heidi Klum (and judge Nina Garcia), Linda Evangelista and Cindy Crawford, who presented an award to Italian designer Roberto Cavalli.

Actress Julianne Moore was there, as was Stanley Tucci and director Woody Allen, seated between his wife and Mathilde Krim, founding chairman of the American Foundation for AIDS Research, or amfAR. Actress-singer Jennifer Hudson grooved to Monae's performance. Lindsay Lohan showed up in a demure, long-sleeved white dress.

The event raised more than $1.4 million for AIDS research, the group said. Other honorees, besides Cavalli, were Chopard co-president Caroline Scheufele, and Goldman Sachs Gives.

www.zoomsalestraining.com Online Business to Business Sales Training Programs If you?re in a high trust selling environment, understanding buy cycle selling is critical. While there is plenty of high trust selling outside the business to business channel, we will focus on the b-2-b sales channel here. Your sales career may have started back when you could, ?show up and throw up? a presentation and still win the sale. A decade ago you might be able to use something like an ROI and convince someone you will deliver the value and maybe win the sale. But now it?s entirely different and you have to make some changes in your sales approach to compete. In the past is was enough to engage with a prospective customer once they knew that they were ready to make a purchase, had it in their budget or otherwise were ready to take action. Then, the salesperson?s job was to determine the customer?s requirements and draft a proposal that both met the customer?s requirements and beat the competition. Traditionally, the salesperson maintained a good enough relationship with the customer so that when the customer was ready to buy something, they let their sales rep know. 713-338-2512 10333 Harwin Drive Suite 570 Houston, Texas 77036 youtu.be

Sidney Crosby practices with Penguins

(AP) ? Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby practiced Monday but said he is no closer to returning from a concussion and neck injury that have sidelined him for most of the season.

Coach Dan Bylsma felt with Jordan Staal and Simon Despres ready to resume skating after their injuries, it was better to include Crosby in the main practice rather than have him skate on his own.

Crosby moved with plenty of energy and took part in every drill.

"It was good to be out there," he said. "I wasn't going to skate by myself if I didn't have to.

"This week's been pretty good. I feel like I'm getting there. I don't know the timeframe. I wish I did."

Crosby said he is not ready to resume practicing regularly with his teammates.

"I'll be back (skating) by myself and doing the type of things injured guys usually do," he said.

"You play hockey because you love being part of the team and being around that type of atmosphere. When you're injured it's not like that. You're out there with one or two guys and you're on your own. It's nice to be with the group."

He said he has felt a little better in the past week and is optimistic since the injury has been diagnosed as a neck problem rather than a concussion.

But when asked if he was symptom-free, he said: "No. As soon as I am hopefully I'll be out there. That's where I want to be."

Asked how Crosby looked, Bylsma said: "He always looks good when he's got his gear on." He added there was no change in Crosby's status.

Bylsma said forward Tyler Kennedy was sent back to Pittsburgh to be examined for a lower-body injury.

With Americans holed up in Cairo embassy, Egypt's lobbyists in DC quit

It takes a lot to get K Street to distance itself from a regime. Egypt's ruling military junta has manged the feat by investigating a group of American NGO workers for criminal prosecution.

On Sunday, a group of Egyptian officers landed in the US to lobby for their annual $1.3 billion stipend form Congress to keep flowing. Not coincidentally, Defense Secretary Leon Panetta called Egypt's military ruler, Field Marshall Mohammed Tantawi, to ask a little favor at about the same time. Would he please lift the travel ban on a group of Americans working on democracy promotion in Egypt??

The answer, apparently, was no. Tonight the Americans, a group of employees for the International Republican Institute (IRI) and the National Democratic Institute (NDI), are holed up in the US Embassy in Cairo, avoiding possible arrest.

One of them is Sam LaHood, IRI's Egypt director and the son of US President Barack Obama's Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood. The US-funded groups' offices were raided in December, cash and equipment confiscated by armed Egyptian security officers.? A number of their local executives have been banned from leaving Egypt pending a criminal investigation, and the US Embassy has taken the group in on concerns that further measures will be taken against them.

How badly are Egypt's military rulers handling the relationship with the US? This badly: The lobbyists representing Egypt's interests in DC, led by former Representatives Robert Livingston (R) of Louisiana and Toby Moffet (D) of Connecticut, dropped their $90,000 a month contract a few days ago. The two former Congressmen had stuck with Egypt as Mubarak refused to step down last January, as the military killed and jailed protesters throughout the course of last year, and even defended the December NGO raids. But the direct targeting of the Americans, most with ties to the DC establishment, was a bridge too far.

Egypt's aggressive moves against IRI, NDI and others reflects the longstanding desire of Egypt's rulers, whether the junta running the show now or Hosni Mubarak before them, to control money flowing to domestic groups. Egypt has refused to grant operating licenses to either IRI or NDI despite multiple requests -- yet has allowed them to operate mostly unmolested (except for shutting them down for a time in 2006) for years.

Egypt describes its investigation into the groups for illegally funding Egyptian NGO's as a matter of national sovereignty. But spearheading the movement against the NGOs has been Minister of International Cooperation Fayza Abul Naga, who has for years pushed for America's economic aid to Egypt to be put into an endowment fully under Egypt's control, without preconditions.

Ms. Abul Naga demanded the criminal investigations that led to the raids. When she served Mubarak, her concern was the prevent the flow of foreign money to pro-democracy groups and regime opponents, something she was largely successful at. And if Egypt had simply been interested in restricting the activities of the NGOs, there would have been much less provocative means of going about it.

Egypt's funding is now on the line. While the $1.3 billion per year has generally been treated like an annuity, the Egyptian officers currently in the States are going to get an earful when they make their case for cash in Washington (and without their long time lobbyists to help out). Expect a climbdown by Abul Naga and her bosses in SCAF.
