Lights, Camera, Reno? We watch others but would we let them ...

Reno Video

Australians love Renovation TV shows. Whether it?s ?The Block?, ?Selling Houses Australia? or a slightly less popular show such as ?The Renovators?, viewing numbers are always through the roof (excuse the pun).

There is something enticing about watching people scramble to finish a project. We get to sit there and they have to work. We both get to enjoy the outcome.

The irony of our voyeuristic attitude toward renovation TV is that many of us are so inspired we head off to Bunnings or Masters first thing Saturday morning.

Which makes me wonder; in the day and age of web based video (YouTube), why is it that we are so prepared to watch others but not document our own experience? If we are so inspired by other peoples renovations can we inspire with our own?

Gene has recently purchased a two bedroom property in Sydney?s Northern Suburbs. He spent the first three months renovating the bedroom and bathroom.

A huge fan of both ?The Renovators? and ?The Block?, he quickly decided to record his experience on camera.

?Instead of having the before and after shots like a lot of renovators, I decided to document the entire process. Photos, videos, the whole shebang??

Whether Gene?s footage has the potential to ?go viral? remains to be seen, but he?ll be satisfied even if it is just family and friends who see the final cut.

?I?m constantly updating my family and friends and explaining to colleagues why my back hurts so much. They are amused by my tales and this way they can see what?s happening with their own eyes.?

Gene took out a Personal Loan with Aussie to fund his renovation and says just like the contestants on TV he has a budget and timeframe.

?I took out a Personal Loan to finance the reno, so its money I have to be sensible with. Whether that makes for more entertaining viewing I?m not sure but it?s the same situation as the contestants at the end of the day: build to budget, and get the job done on time!?
