A good strategy for reading improvement for your children, tenn-agers or adults can only be developed when the cause of the difficulty is properly identified. Many people suffer for years, even life times, hiding poor reading skills out of embarrassment; low self-esteem, low income level and the disappointment of unattained educational goals.
The earlier a reading difficulty can be identified and diagnosed the better. A consistent reading improvement program, properly implemented will open doors, doors that are unimaginable, for those who cannot read well. There are specific traits that can indicate later reading difficulties which can be recognized early in a child's life, even at the pre-school stage. Having trouble making and working with the sound patterns of little rhyming ditties or not being able to identify words starting with similar sounds can be difficult for these youngsters.
Parents are often the first to notice these seemingly small traits which sometimes turn into reading difficulties later. It's best not to stress too much when your child is still at the pre-school or kindergarten level because children do learn to read at different rates and, for most, the playing field levels out as they progress into grade one. However testing is available in most school districts and, if not, can be found privately.
If your child's difficulties persist do get them tested because early identification of specific reading challenges, called dyslexia (when grouped together), can really help everyone involved; child, parent and teacher. Be persistent when requesting testing because an early diagnosis can save you significant grief and your child, loss of self-esteem.
A reading plan strategy can be developed for an individual child. A plan that involves teacher, learning assistant, parents and child is best. Regular meetings, bi monthly or monthly, that include all plan participants will greatly assist your child's progress as the agreed upon strategies are implemented at both school and home. You will be pleased to witness your child's willing eagerness to participate in planning their own reading improvement strategy.
Many children experience great relief to have a reading difficulty diagnosed. They are all too aware that their reading abilities are not the same as that of their peer. Self-esteem rises as goals are reached, goals which they have taken part in setting for themselves, when participating in the design their own tailor-made reading improvement plan.
One of the best kept secrets to reading improvement and comprehension improvement is to read out loud. This will help your brain see the words and your ears hear the words. Your brain will take in the information twice. Try it. Some people cannot retain information from reading the words alone but when they read the words aloud they can retain what they hear.
When you study try reading into a tape recorder, then listen to it as you go about your other daily activities. You will retain things you did not remember reading and this trick alone can improve your reading drastically.
