What type of pet fish is common, small, doesn't need a big tank ...

I want to buy a meduim sized fish tank and a fiter for my room and i was wondering what type of small, inexpensive fish i could buy to put in it. Oh, and i want a fish that moves a lot. not those like mexican fighting fish that look dead. And i want a fish that is available at pet shops in Australia.
